Christina Haack<\/a> says her whirlwind romance with Josh Hall had its rocky moments long before they said “I do.”<\/p>\n

The HGTV star and her third husband met<\/a> in February 2021 and were engaged that August. But Haack didn’t say “yes” the first time he asked for her hand, she reveals in this week’s PEOPLE cover story<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first time he proposed I said no, and he threw the ring in the pool,\u201d Haack, 42, reveals. \u201cThat was probably red flag number one.”<\/p>\n

“I don’t think anyone’s ever heard that story before,” she adds. “Sorry. It’s true.”<\/p>\n

Hall had decorated the pool terrace at Haack’s former home in Dana Point, Calif.<\/a> to pop the question but the timing was off, she recalls.<\/p>\n

“We weren’t getting along super great even then, off and on. When things were good, they were good, but it just felt like I wasn’t quite ready and so I just said, ‘This is not the right time,'” she shares. “I don’t remember exactly what I said, but he had the patio decorated and he threw it in the pool.”<\/p>\n

A representative for Hall, 44, shared in a statement to PEOPLE that “Josh has no clue what Christina is talking about.”<\/p>\n

Despite the bumps, Hall and Haack did end up getting engaged six months after they started dating. She confirmed the news in September of 2021<\/a> on Instagram. Three photos showed the pair enjoying a sunset dinner in Los Cabos, Mexico, with a diamond ring featured in two of the photos.<\/p>\n

They tied the knot in secret a month later, in October 2021. They wouldn’t publicly reveal they had married for another six months, in April 2022. Hall filed for divorce after less than three years of marriage in July 2024.<\/p>\n

“The quick courting and all those things, that’s sort of what I was used to and it didn’t even feel right then,” says Haack, who says she’s learned a lot from the end of her third marriage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned to protect myself, my children, my finances, and I also truly, I don’t think until this divorce, I learned how much I appreciate peace, freedom, quiet, chill,” she shares.<\/p>\n

After the divorce was finalized in September, the designer is focused on filming season two<\/a> of her hit show The Flip Off<\/a> with her first husband and former Flip or Flop co-star, Tarek El Moussa, 44, and his wife, Heather Rae El Moussa, 38. She’s also launched her first business, a champagne line called Cl\u00e9 Cach\u00e9e<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And while she does have a new man in her life, CEO Chris Larocca, whom she’s been dating since fall 2024, she says there are no more wedding bells on the horizon.<\/p>\n

“We’re not even discussing getting married. We’re not discussing getting engaged,” she says. “We’re taking things slow. I promise.”<\/p>\n
