{"id":280994,"date":"2025-10-06T05:06:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T05:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/280994\/"},"modified":"2025-10-06T05:06:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T05:06:14","slug":"fragments-of-bacteria-in-our-gut-may-lull-our-brains-to-sleep-at-night-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/280994\/","title":{"rendered":"Fragments of Bacteria in Our Gut May Lull Our Brains to Sleep at Night : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pieces of bacteria migrating from the gut to the brain may play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/huge-accelerometer-study-suggests-the-best-sleep-time-for-heart-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a key role in sleep<\/a>, scientists have discovered, suggesting that the oldest and most basic microorganisms in our bodies are crucial in telling us when to nod off.<\/p>\n<p>These fragments are made of a chemical called peptidoglycan, which comes from bacterial cell walls in the digestive system. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/mp.2016.182\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Previous animal studies<\/a> have suggested peptidoglycan can infiltrate the central nervous system and influence behavior.<\/p>\n<p>In this latest investigation, neuroscientists Erika English and James Krueger, from Washington State University (WSU), used tests on mice to establish that peptidoglycan levels in the brain change over the course of the day, and are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/these-4-key-things-can-help-you-wake-up-feeling-great-scientists-say\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lowest in the morning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-rare-state-of-sleep-could-reveal-secrets-of-consciousness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">This Rare State of Sleep Could Reveal Secrets of Consciousness<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the mice were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-dangers-of-sleep-deprivation-are-very-real-expert-warns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deprived of sleep<\/a>, the mix of peptidoglycan in different sections of the brain varied from typical levels. The activity of genes related to the chemical also changed.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, the patterns suggest substances pushed out by our gut bacteria could be influencing sleep, and are influenced by sleep in return. There&#8217;s still a lot to explore and clarify here, but there&#8217;s strong evidence of some kind of link.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/BrainLevels.jpg\" alt=\"Peptidoglycan levels\" width=\"642\" height=\"358\" class=\"wp-image-176104 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The researchers measured peptidoglycan levels in different areas of mice brains over time. Neurosci., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a whole community of microbes living within us,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/press-release\/2025\/09\/24\/key-to-the-riddle-of-sleep-may-be-linked-to-bacteria\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Krueger. &#8220;Those microbes have a much longer evolutionary history than any mammal, bird, or insect \u2013 much longer, billions of years longer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think sleep evolution began eons ago with the activity\/inactivity cycle of bacteria, and the molecules that were driving that are related to the ones driving cognition today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The results contribute to a hypothesis being tested at WSU that posits that our microbiome plays an important role in regulating sleep, along <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/your-body-has-a-built-in-weight-loss-system-you-may-not-know-about\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with appetite<\/a>, sex drive, and other motivations.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s being called <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.smrv.2025.102145\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the &#8220;holobiont condition&#8221; of sleep<\/a>, the idea that both individual microbes in our body and the master control center of the brain have roles to play in telling us when we need to get some shut-eye and when we need to wake up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not one or the other, it&#8217;s both,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/press-release\/2025\/09\/24\/key-to-the-riddle-of-sleep-may-be-linked-to-bacteria\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> English. &#8220;They have to work together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sleep really is a process. It happens at many different speeds for different levels of cellular and tissue organization, and it comes about because of extensive coordination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An increasing number of studies are shedding light on how the gut and the brain collaborate to maintain healthy functioning.
