The body of Melbourne woman Isla Bell was so badly damaged that forensic experts were unable to say how she died, a court has been told.<\/p>\n

Ms Bell, 19, was reported missing last October before her remains were found about six weeks later at a rubbish tip in Dandenong, in Melbourne’s south-east.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors allege she was murdered by Marat Ganiev, a man she barely knew, with her body stuffed in a fridge and moved around the city before it ended up at the waste facility.<\/p>\n

Co-accused Eyal Yaffe is accused of assisting an offender and attempting to pervert the course of justice.<\/p>\n

The men are facing a committal hearing, with a magistrate to decide if there is sufficient police evidence for the men to stand trial.<\/p>\n

On Monday, loved ones of Ms Bell sat in court as a forensic pathologist described how her remains were found in a state of “advanced decomposition”.<\/p>\n

Hans De Boer said he could not determine a cause of death or tell when numerous lacerations, superficial injuries and fractures to Ms Bell’s skull and ribs were caused.<\/p>\n

Under questioning by Mr Yaffe’s barrister Ian Hill KC, Dr De Boer was asked if damage to the body could be explained by “being compacted” by rubbish truck machinery.<\/p>\n

“That is one explanation,” he replied.<\/p>\n

Dr De Boer said numerous drugs were found in Ms Bell’s system, including methylamphetamine, MDMA, MDA, cannabis, and metabolites produced after the ingestion of cocaine.<\/p>\n

Medication to treat ADHD, depression, anxiety, asthma and sleeping problems was also detected, along with the opioid methadone.<\/p>\n

Dr De Boer said there were no records of Ms Bell being on a methadone program used to treat heroin dependence, saying the drug may have been used off-label as a sedative.<\/p>\n

Forensic anthropologist Samantha Rowbotham, who analysed Ms Bell’s bones, said a time of death could not be determined.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors allege Ms Bell was murdered by Mr Ganiev at a St Kilda East apartment early on October 7, 2024, less than 48 hours after they met.<\/p>\n

Mr Yaffe is accused of helping Mr Ganiev shift the body around Melbourne after it was loaded into a fridge.<\/p>\n

According to previously-released court documents, another man found the remains, and not realising they were human, dumped it in a bin on November 18.<\/p>\n

The remains were located the following day at a waste facility in Dandenong.<\/p>\n

In the weeks before the grim discovery, Ms Bell’s mother had made impassioned pleas for information on social media and at a press conference.<\/p>\n

Ms Bell was remembered as being passionate about climate change and social justice, with her uncle saying she was a “beautiful, kind, honest, courageous person”.<\/p>\n
