President Donald Trump could send 400 members of the Texas National Guard to other states \u201cto ensure safety for federal officials,\u201d Gov. Greg Abbott<\/a> said Sunday on social media.<\/p>\n

On Sunday evening, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker posted on X<\/a>, saying that the president is ordering the deployment of Texas National Guard members to locations like Illinois and Oregon, calling it \u201cTrump\u2019s invasion.\u201d The announcement followed protests at ICE facilities in these states that have led to arrests.<\/p>\n

Pritzker also called on Abbott to refuse any coordination.<\/p>\n

Less than an hour later, the Texas governor responded that he \u201cfully authorize[s]\u201d such a move by the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can either fully enforce protection for federal employees or get out of the way and let Texas Guard do it,\u201d Abbott said in a post on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a memo about the Texas Guard\u2019s mobilization that \u201cthe orders will be effective immediately for an initial period of 60 days.\u201d They could also be extended where needed, including in Portland and Chicago.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear how the deployment would proceed, however, as a federal judge on Sunday temporarily blocked the deployment of any National Guard units to Oregon, The Associated Press reported<\/a>. Abbott\u2019s office didn\u2019t immediately respond to a question from The Texas Tribune.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time Abbott has authorized the Texas National Guard in recent years.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the governor granted the Texas National Guard the authority to make immigration arrests<\/a> through an agreement between the state and the Trump administration. The agreement allowed National Guard members to help detain and deport undocumented people in the state.<\/p>\n

He also deployed more than 5,000 Texas National Guard troops to the sites of protests and demonstrations<\/a> against immigration raids and deportations in June.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone engaging in acts of violence or damaging property will be arrested and held accountable to the full extent of the law,\u201d Abbott said in a June news release announcing the deployment.<\/p>\n

Even before Trump began his second term, Abbott dispatched about 10,000 Texas National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as part of Operation Lone Star<\/a> \u2014 the governor\u2019s border security initiative.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica must also know that Texas still has thousands of National Guard assisting with the Border security,\u201d Abbott said in his Sunday post.<\/p>\n
