{"id":283526,"date":"2025-10-07T08:00:20","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T08:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/283526\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T08:00:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T08:00:20","slug":"government-shutdown-hits-air-travel-closing-burbank-control-tower-and-causing-delays-across-the-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/283526\/","title":{"rendered":"Government shutdown hits air travel, closing Burbank control tower and causing delays across the country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      Washington<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgg2u2kx00003b6obcv8igva@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A pilot preparing to take off Monday from Hollywood Burbank Airport in California took the routine step of radioing the air traffic control tower.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgg2ubab00053b6ovksidnac@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But instead of the usual back-and-forth conversation of coordinating departure, the pilot received a different response: \u201cThe tower is closed due to staffing,\u201d according to audio recorded by LiveATC.net.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgg2ubab00063b6owfjgl4se@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The exchange is one example of the impact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/05\/politics\/government-shutdown-enters-second-week\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ongoing government shutdown<\/a> is having on travelers across the US as air traffic controller staffing issues have led to delays at major airports and forced pilots in some areas to pivot to alternative workflows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvz900043b6ncfrcgdo3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Controllers are considered essential workers, so they must work during the shutdown, but are not being paid.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvz900053b6nytj81k6m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Twelve Federal Aviation Administration facilities saw staffing shortages Monday night. The control towers in Burbank, Phoenix and Denver had so called \u201cstaffing triggers\u201d reported in the public FAA operations plan. Other facilities that handle air traffic around airports in Newark, New Jersey; Jacksonville, Florida; Chicago, Washington, DC, and Indianapolis also were short staffed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvz900063b6nbfam1n35@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perhaps the most dramatic impact was at the Burbank airport where the control tower was entirely shut down around 4:15 p.m. Monday afternoon. Flights could take off and land but had to follow procedures typically used at small airports without control towers. Delays of more than two and a half hours were reported at one point.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvz900073b6nukgg2cuc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Denver International and Newark Liberty International airports saw ground delays where flights were prohibited from taking off until controllers were able to handle them. How do I make my car payment?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cDo I think they\u2019re more stressed right now in our towers? Yes. Is our airspace unsafe? No.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvz9000a3b6ngxvv159z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During this shutdown, Duffy said, the government will do what is necessary to keep the airspace safe.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvz9000b3b6nmwyagkla@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf we have additional sick calls, we will reduce the flow consistent with a rate that\u2019s safe for the American people,\u201d he said, foreshadowing the delays seen later in the day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvza000c3b6n6sgk6xou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 35-day government shutdown that stretched from December 2018 to January 2019 ended after <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2019%2F02%2F06%2Fpolitics%2Ften-air-traffic-controllers-shutdown&amp;data=05%7C02%7Caaron.cooper%40cnn.com%7Cb7978430a5d347f54f7108de00530ada%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638948553817134505%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=6Mg94XVAiptFEV0vF5Q4zdFbKmCllifVQjZ5GbAZ1tY%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">10 air traffic controllers stayed home<\/a>, snarling air traffic. I want them to get paid for the work they\u2019re doing today, keeping our planes in the air.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvza000f3b6nd7xccvog@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The National Air Traffic Controllers Association, the union which represents controllers, said the problems highlight a decades long staffing shortage.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvza000g3b6n4htticua@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is normal for a few air traffic controllers to <strong>\u2026<\/strong> call in sick on any given day, and this is the latest example of how fragile our aviation system is in the midst of a national shortage of these critical safety professionals,\u201d NATCA said in a statement. \u201cNearly 11,000 fully certified controllers remain on the job, many working 10-hour shifts as many as six days a week, showing extraordinary dedication to safely guiding millions of passengers to their destinations\u2013all without getting paid during this shutdown.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgg2u9r200033b6o223ttp7z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Burbank Monday, the pilot who radioed the control tower before takeoff received a message noting the workers had gone home.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvza000j3b6nibt8dy7g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cClearence is closed, ground is closed, local is closed. They travel by air, and a lot of these are small communities. Its report details past shutdowns and the direct impacts on aviation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgfzhvza00113b6ns5k6bast@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis stop-and-start process in Congress has resulted in the disruption of critical activities, notably including the hiring and training of air traffic controllers,\u201d the report read. \u201cIt has also slowed down the implementation of key technology modernization programs, delayed thousands of flights, and held up billions of dollars of airport infrastructure investments.
