{"id":283927,"date":"2025-10-07T12:11:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T12:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/283927\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T12:11:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T12:11:13","slug":"oct-7-remembrances-to-be-held-today-in-nyc-as-families-and-survivors-hold-out-hope-for-ceasefire-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/283927\/","title":{"rendered":"Oct. 7 remembrances to be held today in NYC, as families and survivors hold out hope for ceasefire deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remembrances are being held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/columbia-butler-lawn-israel-hamas-war-memorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">around the New York City area<\/a> Tuesday marking two years since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/israel-hamas-war-timeline-major-events-since-october-7-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel<\/a> that sparked the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/israel-hamas-negotiations-trump-ceasefire-deal-gaza-war-egypt-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">war in Gaza<\/a> and continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-gaza-peace-deal-negotiations-israel-hamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">reverberate across the Middle East<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than 10,000 people are expected to gather on Central Park&#8217;s Great Lawn to commemorate the day. As they remember the victims, it&#8217;s also the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, a time that&#8217;s typically devoted to peace and reflection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a unique brand of torment&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, the memory remains vivid for many. Hamas militants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/israel-attack-hamas-what-we-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">launched an unprecedented attack on Israel<\/a>, killing more than 1,200 people that day and taking more than 250 others hostage.<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/october-7-attack-survivor-speaker-nyc-high-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">survivors<\/a> and families of the victims, the pain has never gone away. Rachel Goldberg Polin said her son, Hersh, was captured and killed by Hamas at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nova-music-festival-tomer-meir-israel-hamas-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Nova Music Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/vlcsnap-2025-10-07-07h21m55s188.png#.png\" alt=\"vlcsnap-2025-10-07-07h21m55s188.png \" height=\"349\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                  Rachel Goldberg Polin says her son, Hersh, was captured and killed by Hamas at the Nova Music Festival on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>                Family handout<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think, when it&#8217;s a child, it&#8217;s a unique brand of torment,&#8221; she told CBS News New York. &#8220;You don&#8217;t get better, because when you&#8217;re broken in a certain way, you just have to learn how to live with that brokenness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said she still has conversations with her son.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I say, &#8216;Good morning, my sweet boy. Let me feel your love and your light today. No more pain, just love and strength,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hope for a deal to release the hostages<\/p>\n<p>As commemorations are being held across Israel and in Jewish communities around the world, many say the day feels especially touching as it serves as a reminder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/hamas-attack-on-israel-october-7-commemoration-central-park-nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ongoing hope for peace<\/a>, even amid sadness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Goldberg Polin said she believes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hamas-agreed-to-parts-of-gaza-peace-proposal-trump-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">deal to release the hostages<\/a> is closer than ever but she also remembers the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/gaza-famine-declaration-israel-rejects-un-backed-ipc-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">suffering civilians in Gaza<\/a> are going through.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you only cry when one side&#8217;s babies die, it means your moral compass is broken, and therefore, your humanity is broken,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Israelis and Jews are being called to not only look back on the Oct. 7 tragedy but to forward toward healing and peace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sukkot is set to begin at 3 p.m., a powerful reminder that even in the face of tragedy, hope and strength remain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/team\/Elijah-Westbrook\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elijah  Westbrook<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Elijah Westbrook is an Emmy award-winning journalist.
