But peace talks have resumed with the hope for the end of the war and the release of the remaining hostages. Recently, Israel and Hamas entered into indirect talks to end the war in Gaza, after both sides signaled support for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gaza-israel-palestinians-hamas-war-explainer-d5c5057d2fe9e2e255215850b454f601\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump\u2019s peace plan.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">These negotiations, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-news-10-06-2025-3c3e1d13e86fabeaaff7930a18c6590a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt<\/a>, and mediated by the United States, aim to firm up the plan\u2019s first phase. The centerpiece is a ceasefire that would allow Hamas to release all remaining hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Trump\u2019s plan has drawn broad international backing, raising hopes of ending a devastating conflict that has dramatically reshaped global politics, claimed tens of thousands of Palestinian lives, and left much of Gaza in ruins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">At home, the conflict has triggered near-daily protests across New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> What happened on Oct. 7? <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WNYW\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The backstory:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">On Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led militants launched a surprise cross-border assault on Israel, firing rockets and storming into towns near the Gaza border. They struck up to 22 communities, some as far as 15 miles from Gaza, killing approximately 1,200 people\u2014mostly civilians\u2014and abducting around 250 others.<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/19D924C35C993D37DF0A454A24C36708.jpg\" alt=\"Israel formally declares war\" class=\"sr-only\" data-v-7a5d4fdb=\"\"\/>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5ny.com\/video\/1292680\" data-v-7a5d4fdb=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel formally declares war<\/a> <\/p>\n<p data-v-7a5d4fdb=\"\">More than 11,000 people are dead, and thousands more injured, after the Palestinian group, Hamas, launched a surprise attack on Israel. FOX 5 NY\u2019s Robert Moses has the latest.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war against Hamas, vowing to exact an &#8220;unprecedented price.&#8221; Israel then launched a sweeping military campaign across Gaza, with airstrikes and ground offensives that escalated into one of the region\u2019s most destructive conflicts in recent memory.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Since that day, Israel and Hamas have engaged in indirect peace negotiations\u2014most recently in Sharm el-Sheikh\u2014seeking to halt the fighting and secure hostage-prisoner exchanges. But thorny issues like disarmament and Gaza\u2019s postwar governance remain unsolved.<\/p>\n<p> How many hostages remain in Gaza? <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">By the numbers:<\/p>\n<ul original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WNYW\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Total hostages captured during Oct. 7 attack: <strong>251<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Hostages taken before the Oct. 7 attack:<strong> 4 (two who entered Gaza in 2014 and 2015 and the bodies of two soldiers killed in the 2014 war)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Hostages released in exchanges or other deals: <strong>148, of whom eight were dead<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Bodies of hostages retrieved by Israeli forces: <strong>51<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Hostages rescued alive: <strong>8<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Hostages still in captivity: <strong>48, of which the Israeli military believes 20 are still alive<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Non-Israeli hostages in captivity: <strong>4 (two <\/strong><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-ceasefire-hostages-thai-dccc8d8da8c56d5122a21a6b89c7175d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Thai<\/strong><\/a><strong> nationals and one Tanzanian who have been confirmed dead, and one Nepalese national)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> Where do things stand now? <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Nearly two years removed from the Oct. 7 attacks and Israel\u2019s invasion of Gaza, Americans are more divided than ever over the Israeli\u2013Palestinian conflict.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/7C8E9FFE771E06BFE8FED867015674C5.jpg\" alt=\"Israeli, Hamas officials to meet on US peace plan for Gaza\" class=\"sr-only\" data-v-7a5d4fdb=\"\"\/>   <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Hamas says it is willing to return all remaining Israeli hostages held in Gaza and the bodies of the dead in accordance with Trump\u2019s peace plan.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Under the plan, Hamas would release the remaining 48 hostages \u2014 around 20 of them believed to be alive \u2014 within three days. It would also give up power and disarm.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Locally, groups are organizing more actions tied to the anniversary.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">On social media, the group <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WOLPalestine\" rel=\"nofollow\">Within Our Lifetime<\/a> (with more than 37,000 followers) is calling Oct. 7 a &#8220;Day of Action&#8221; to &#8220;expose their lies&#8221; and &#8220;free Palestine,&#8221; organizing a protest at 4:30 p.m. near the Newscorp headquarters on 6th Avenue in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Meanwhile, another group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/israelisforpeacenyc\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israelis for Peace,<\/a> plans a vigil marking two years of conflict. Their statement reads: &#8220;We hope and pray that by then a deal will be signed, the carnage will end, and all hostages will be on their way home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Jews will be celebrating Sukkot<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The second anniversary of the attacks coincides this year with the start of Sukkot, a Jewish holiday when people leave their permanent dwellings to live temporarily in booths (sukkot).
