SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 The Diversity Recovery Center<\/a> is a brand-new space for people in addiction recovery, but it\u2019s unique in one way: a singular focus on the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n

KSAT was invited to sit in on a recovery meeting at the center where members said their emotions, struggles and gratitude could flow freely. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe find ourselves in really hard times and we\u2019re struggling,\u201d one person, who did not want to be identified, said in the meeting. \u201cAnd it\u2019s nice to be reminded or surrounded by messages that love can flow with ease.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing able to cultivate really loving healthy relationships with other people in recovery has been such a gift for me,\u201d another person said.<\/p>\n

The meeting space opened in April. Its rapid growth showcases just how many people it is helping. <\/p>\n

\u201cA person in recovery walks into a space. They are really scared, especially if they\u2019re new,\u201d Discovery Recovery Center president Chris Crouch said. \u201cSo when you\u2019re LGBTQIA and you walk into this space, you start seeing that, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m home, and I\u2019m going to be safe here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

After 30 years of sobriety, Crouch wanted to give back by bringing the Diversity Recovery Center to San Antonio.<\/p>\n

His goal was to make it different than other LGBTQ+ recovery spaces around the country by making the center open to all types of recovery programs, not just 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous.<\/p>\n

\u201c(We do) 12-step programs, Dharma Recovery, Rise Recovery, Smart Recovery,\u201d Crouch said. \u201cAnything that has to do with addiction recovery, including trauma work.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI can also see people that are here to have one-on-one meetings with their spiritual mentors, congregating at the same time,\u201d member Jonathan Garcia said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s just really beautiful to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garcia said it\u2019s an all-inclusive space for a community that often does not feel catered to. <\/p>\n

\u201cI feel a general sense of kinship to people that are in recovery in general,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cBut when I\u2019m with my LGBT brothers and sisters, like, we are family.\u201d <\/p>\n

The tight-knit group of members hopes that the \u201cfamily,\u201d as Garcia put it, will grow.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have ever felt like you don\u2019t belong, I hope that you\u2019ll come here,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n
