{"id":284754,"date":"2025-10-07T20:47:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T20:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/284754\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T20:47:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T20:47:11","slug":"duval-county-teachers-to-benefit-from-3m-grant-to-advance-civics-u-s-history-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/284754\/","title":{"rendered":"Duval County teachers to benefit from $3M grant to advance civics, U.S. History education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 Duval County teachers have the chance to participate in learning programs that will further advance civics and U.S. History education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The two programs are backed by a more than $3 million federal grant from the Department of Education and feature a partnership with the University of North Florida (UNF) and Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The \u201cCultivating Comprehensive Civics Education\u201d program, led by UNF, will use $2.1 million over the next three years to help 90 middle school civics teachers &#8220;deepen their knowledge of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and other founding documents while exploring ways to bring real-world civic issues into the classroom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cCivics isn\u2019t just memorizing dates and facts\u2014it\u2019s about preparing students to think critically and participate in democracy,\u201d said Dr. Diane Yendol-Hoppey, a professor at UNF helping lead the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The second program is called \u201c250 Years of Democracy.\u201d It is led by FSCJ and focuses on professional development for 550 middle and high school teachers from more than 100 schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">About $1.5 million will be used to offer online courses, workshops and trips to the Florida State Capitol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">This initiative ties into the upcoming 250th anniversary of America\u2019s founding in 2026, encouraging teachers to highlight the nation\u2019s democratic traditions while preparing students for today\u2019s civic challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The initiative gives teachers the tools to teach students about democracy, the importance of history, and how to engage in their communities.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2025 by WJXT News4JAX &#8211;
