{"id":284766,"date":"2025-10-07T20:53:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T20:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/284766\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T20:53:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T20:53:09","slug":"bexar-elections-optimistic-25k-registrations-will-be-filed-in-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/284766\/","title":{"rendered":"Bexar Elections &#8216;optimistic&#8217; 25K registrations will be filed in time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A large backlog of new voter registration applications still haven\u2019t been processed ahead of the Nov. 4 election \u2014 blowing through <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-processing-long-backlog-of-voter-registrations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bexar County leaders\u2019 goal<\/a> of having them mostly done by the end of last week.<\/p>\n<p>Elections Administrator Michele Carew said Tuesday even after transitioning to a new state-run voter registration system, there was a two-and-a-half day delay getting up to speed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re literally working around the clock right now to ensure that that does take place,\u201d Carew said. \u201cWe know that we still have [more applications] to work on, but we\u2019re still very optimistic that we\u2019re going to have it done in time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The voter registration deadline for <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/voter-guide-what-to-know-about-bexar-county-nov-4-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this November\u2019s election<\/a> was Monday, Oct. 6.<\/p>\n<p>Carew said the county has until the start of early voting, on Oct. 20, to get the remaining 25,000 applications processed. <\/p>\n<p>New voters may not have received their voter registration cards in the mail, she said, but can still vote using their driver\u2019s license or other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bexar.org\/3945\/Voter-Registration-FAQs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forms of legal identification<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-selects-former-north-texas-elections-official-to-lead-local-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carew took over<\/a> leading Bexar County\u2019s Elections Department in March, replacing <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-elections-chief-jacque-callanen-takes-a-bow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an elections administrator<\/a> who had held the position for more than two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other county departments, the Elections Department reports directly to county commissioners, meaning there\u2019s little oversight of its day-to-day operations. <\/p>\n<p>County Judge Peter Sakai said last week he had full confidence in Carew to manage the transition, but did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication after the original processing goals weren\u2019t met. <\/p>\n<p>Stressful times<\/p>\n<p>The Elections Department has had an exhausting couple of weeks working through backlogged applications, leaning on temporary workers while longtime employees hit their limit.<\/p>\n<p>That dynamic worries some voting rights advocates who say the problem isn\u2019t being taken seriously enough.<\/p>\n<p>Bexar County was thrust into a chaotic transition process when its longtime voter registration\u00a0vendor, Votec, went under this summer \u2014 at the same time the state\u2019s system was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.votebeat.org\/texas\/2025\/09\/25\/team-voter-registration-system-problems-county-election-officials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">undergoing a massive update<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of September that meant roughly 52,000 applications were sitting untouched waiting for the new system to come online \u2014 ahead of an <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/voter-guide-what-to-know-about-bexar-county-nov-4-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">election that means more for Bexar County<\/a> than many other Texas municipalities.<\/p>\n<p>Work is going quickly now, Carew said, but staff is exhausted from long days. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kvue.com\/article\/news\/politics\/vote-texas\/travis-county-voter-registration-backlog\/269-08f547ef-90be-4ef4-9ff8-2d2fe0a7e6cd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Other counties<\/a> are in the same boat.<\/p>\n<p>This week the department\u2019s second in command, James Huerta, put in his two-weeks notice this week, Carew confirmed. A public information officer who Carew hired when she arrived earlier this year also took a job in another county, amid other staff departures as well.<\/p>\n<p>Bexar County brought on 30 temporary employees to help, and eight more are coming on later this week, Carew said. Staff is working from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every night until the backlog is taken care of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of staff members that are doing voter registration duties that are not necessarily in their wheelhouse,\u201d Carew said. \u201cEveryone is tired.
