{"id":284880,"date":"2025-10-07T22:07:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T22:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/284880\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T22:07:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T22:07:09","slug":"san-diego-mayor-names-nominee-for-vacant-cfo-position-nbc-7-san-diego","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/284880\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego mayor names nominee for vacant CFO position \u2013 NBC 7 San Diego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has named his pick to fill the city&#8217;s vacant chief financial officer position, his office announced Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>Rolando Charvel is the mayor&#8217;s nominee to become the city&#8217;s top financier, pending approval by the San Diego City Council. <\/p>\n<p>Charvel previously served as CFO from 2017-2020 before being succeeded by Matthew Vespi during the COVID pandemic. Vespi was hired as the Port of San Diego&#8217;s chief administrative officer last month, leaving the CFO seat vacant. <\/p>\n<p>Charvel currently serves as the city&#8217;s director of finance and city comptroller and has 26 years of experience in public finance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rolando has demonstrated exceptional financial stewardship, a deep commitment to public service and the strategic leadership we need to guide San Diego&#8217;s fiscal future,&#8221; Gloria said. &#8220;His track record of driving innovation, improving transparency and delivering results makes him the ideal candidate to serve as our chief financial officer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The CFO leads the city&#8217;s financial strategy \u2014 including overseeing the budget \u2014 accounting, the city&#8217;s treasury and will serve as the mayor&#8217;s advisor on financial policy and fiscal planning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m honored by the mayor&#8217;s confidence and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the people of San Diego,&#8221; Charvel said. &#8220;Fiscal responsibility is the foundation of public trust, and I look forward to continuing our efforts to strengthen transparency, modernize systems and ensure the city&#8217;s long-term financial health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Charvel joined the city in 1999 and has since held the positions of comptroller, director of financial reporting and CFO.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria&#8217;s office touted some of his accomplishments, including consolidating San Diego&#8217;s accounting, budgeting and debt management functions, saving the city more than $900,000 annually.<\/p>\n<p>Charvel serves as chair of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants Committee on Municipal Accounting.
