{"id":285883,"date":"2025-10-08T06:55:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T06:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/285883\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T06:55:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T06:55:12","slug":"portland-leaders-seek-dialogue-while-kristi-noem-slams-local-electeds-as-pansies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/285883\/","title":{"rendered":"Portland leaders seek dialogue, while Kristi Noem slams local electeds as \u2018pansies\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3OJTL37BP5H7TH4SU2ESD5LJ34\">Portland police Chief Bob Day met twice Tuesday with U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/police-order-crowd-away-from-portland-ice-office-as-kristi-noem-set-to-visit-city.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/police-order-crowd-away-from-portland-ice-office-as-kristi-noem-set-to-visit-city.html\">Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem<\/a> in what he called an effort to build a relationship with federal partners, even as the two share differing views on protests around the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/feds-grant-ice-building-access-to-conservative-media-influencers-ignore-local-portland-press.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/feds-grant-ice-building-access-to-conservative-media-influencers-ignore-local-portland-press.html\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QAYHO72EMRDN3LV2FXERVDIRCE\">\u201cI\u2019m grateful for the opportunity to have met with the secretary today,\u201d Day told reporters shortly after 5 p.m. \u201cAnd I believe that communication is the first step to resolving our differences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"66BEBQVGTJAITLSVVRSTQA6HKA\">Noem\u2019s visit comes as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/portland\/2025\/10\/cities-back-oregon-in-legal-brief-portland-pushes-back-against-trump-in-fiery-letter-get-caught-up.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/portland\/2025\/10\/cities-back-oregon-in-legal-brief-portland-pushes-back-against-trump-in-fiery-letter-get-caught-up.html\">city and the federal government battle over<\/a> President Donald Trump\u2019s plans to deploy troops to Portland. The president said last week he was mobilizing the National Guard at Noem\u2019s request.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"A2CP5B4OARHBXCKWLYLGVAWLVM\">Around noon, when Noem arrived at the ICE building in South Portland, about 20 people \u2014 most of whom were reporters \u2014 milled behind the police tape that Portland officers stretched across multiple intersections to block the building\u2019s entrance for her visit. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Portland ICE office -- Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025\" class=\"hero-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IB7A3MXNGJGATIRQODOWVTTHME.JPG\"\/>Portland police officers cordoned off the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited on Tues., Oct. 7, 2025.Zaeem Shaikh\/The Oregonian<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KKPP3HJ4HRAPXAJCAFEIFH5KFM\">Noem briefly appeared on the roof around 1:30 p.m. to observe the area, and a handful of protesters heckled her. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2RFCGHUIR5D63AC5TPHQ7VP3EU\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6382229475112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6382229475112\">appearance on Fox News<\/a>, Noem called local elected officials \u201cpansies\u201d and said she wanted more security at the ICE building. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S5CVPI2FFNGRXJSEOCSPXJLCGA\">She told host Jesse Watters, \u201cWe wanted to have their streets opened up again and to not let the anarchists run this city anymore. That we would ask them to continue to back us up like we\u2019ve been asking for rather than what they\u2019ve been doing the last several months, which is just letting our officers hang out to dry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TR2TWOGBVRG7RJLNCU6433PUTQ\">The ICE facility has been the site of protests since early June, but they have been small compared with social justice demonstrations that roiled the city in 2020. They intensified in the days after Trump\u2019s troop announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FWUI64VB5RBMHIJGWFK5HNGFYE\">Since June, federal and local police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/crime\/2025\/09\/arrests-outside-portland-ice-building-have-dropped-throughout-summer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/crime\/2025\/09\/arrests-outside-portland-ice-building-have-dropped-throughout-summer.html\">have arrested<\/a> about 70 people outside the building on allegations ranging from assaulting officers and destroying government property to harassment and disorderly conduct. Federal police have also deployed chemical munitions, including pepper spray, smoke and tear gas, against protesters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"D4SUD55FF5AQ7OBJ3X57SBU3XQ\">Noem met with Day alongside Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O\u2019Donnell and Oregon State Police Superintendent Casey Codding. Day spoke with her again later in the afternoon with Mayor Keith Wilson. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VD6VRX24AVBSZKYUD6JZULDY4Y\">Morrisey O\u2019Donnell said in a statement the sheriff\u2019s office supports and welcomes partnerships \u201cwith our federal agencies when those efforts complement our local public safety priorities, respect Oregon law and are predicated on accountability and transparency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VW5QMTZ7EJFLZGU5Q55HVLMED4\">Wilson said the calm Noem witnessed Tuesday showed that \u201cPortland continues to manage public safety professionally and responsibly, irrespective of the claims of out-of-state social media influencers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SGTZZBJWNJGO5FCMEJYAIXMRPQ\">He said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/crime\/2025\/10\/federal-officer-blasts-chemical-spray-into-vocal-but-nonviolent-portland-protester-video-shows.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/crime\/2025\/10\/federal-officer-blasts-chemical-spray-into-vocal-but-nonviolent-portland-protester-video-shows.html\">tactics used by federal agents<\/a> at the facility were troubling and likely unconstitutional and said \u201cwe still do not know what \u2018full force\u2019 against Portland means,\u201d referencing Trump\u2019s comments when he first authorized sending troops to Oregon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L3NTGWCPQBB55KEQ3NSFYRNIY4\">\u201cIn the meantime, I will continue to demand that federal officers operating in our city adhere to the same high standards we require of the Portland Police Bureau,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cWe believe a constitutional federal government must be accountable to the community in terms of clear limits on use of force, officer identification, limits on chemical munitions, and body-worn cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JQJVK4SSLFB5FAXVTOGS7NQF4E\">It\u2019s not clear how long Noem plans to stay in Portland. Officials said that she participated in immigration enforcement efforts in the area, but the Police Bureau had no involvement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZMQB7LMEMBB6JABNIMCQJAS5RQ\">Noem also met Tuesday with Gov.
