(KATU) \u2014 After meeting with Portland Mayor Keith Wilson on Tuesday <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/katu.com\/news\/local\/homeland-security-secretary-kristi-noem-expected-in-portland-for-ice-facility-visit-benny-johnson-instagram-multnomah-county-keith-wilson-mayor-trump-adminstration-protests\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/katu.com\/news\/local\/homeland-security-secretary-kristi-noem-expected-in-portland-for-ice-facility-visit-benny-johnson-instagram-multnomah-county-keith-wilson-mayor-trump-adminstration-protests\" class=\"themeColorForLinks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">during a visit to Portland<\/a><\/strong>, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Fox News that if the mayor did not meet some of her demands for more security at the ICE facility \u201cwe were going to send four times the amount of federal officers\u201d to the city.<\/p>\n<p>Noem\u2019s remarks to Fox&#8217;s host Jesse Watters contrasted with a more muted <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portland.gov\/mayor\/keith-wilson\/news\/2025\/10\/7\/mayor-wilson-responds-following-meeting-secretary-noem-portland\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.portland.gov\/mayor\/keith-wilson\/news\/2025\/10\/7\/mayor-wilson-responds-following-meeting-secretary-noem-portland\" class=\"themeColorForLinks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement from Wilson<\/a><\/strong> on Tuesday evening that did not mention any ultimatum issued by the secretary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI continue to maintain that the tactics used by federal agents at the ICE facility are troubling and likely unconstitutional,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cIn terms of recent rhetoric, we still do not know what \u2018Full Force\u2019 against Portland means, or how the administration plans to use our city as a military \u2018training ground.\u2019 Because of these deeply concerning situational unknowns, I intend to explore options to protect our community and our right to free expression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Portland Police Chief Bob Day\u2019s remarks during a news conference following his meeting with Noem (that he said included Wilson) were conciliatory and strived for what he called a \u201cholistic approach\u201d to handling the protests outside the ICE facility in South Portland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s clearly differences of opinion,&#8221; he said about his meeting with the secretary. &#8220;I wouldn\u2019t say that we\u2019re all in alignment on every point, but I can say that, you know, we continue to be professionals, and we continue to strive for a shared value of safety.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When asked to respond to Noem&#8217;s remarks on Fox News, a spokesperson with the Portland Police Bureau said in an email, &#8220;We&#8217;re going to let the Chief&#8217;s remarks at the news conference stand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A request for comment from Wilson was not immediately returned Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Noem arrived in Portland shortly before 11:30 a.m. and made her way down to the ICE facility where she toured the building and appeared for a short time on its roof with conservative influencer Nick Sortor, who was arrested by Portland police last week during a protest. The Multnomah County District Attorney\u2019s Office <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/katu.com\/news\/local\/conservative-influencer-nick-sortor-cleared-from-charges-after-portland-protest-oregon-republican-democrat-ice-counterprotester-multnomah-county-donald-trump-national-guard#\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/katu.com\/news\/local\/conservative-influencer-nick-sortor-cleared-from-charges-after-portland-protest-oregon-republican-democrat-ice-counterprotester-multnomah-county-donald-trump-national-guard#\" class=\"themeColorForLinks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">declined to charge him<\/a><\/strong>, saying a charge of disorderly conduct could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.<\/p>\n<p>In her interview with Watters, Noem accused Portland of allowing federal officers to \u201chang out to dry\u201d outside the ICE facility.<\/p>\n<p>Noem said she was disappointed with Wilson\u2019s response to her demands for more security, a larger buffer zone around the building and the streets reopened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did not commit to any of those promises and said he would give me an answer by tomorrow, and I\u2019m hopeful that he will,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat I told him that if he did not follow through on some of these security measures for our officers, we were going to cover him up with more federal resources and that we were going to send four times the amount of federal officers here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noem also spoke with Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O\u2019Donnell and Oregon State Police Superintendent Casey Codding during her visit to Portland.<\/p>\n<p>The secretary\u2019s visit to the city followed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/katu.com\/news\/local\/trump-sends-national-guard-to-portland-over-antifa-violence-federal-property-threats-multnomah-county-ice-immigration-customs-enforcement-bob-day-police#\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/katu.com\/news\/local\/trump-sends-national-guard-to-portland-over-antifa-violence-federal-property-threats-multnomah-county-ice-immigration-customs-enforcement-bob-day-police#\" class=\"themeColorForLinks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">President Donald Trump\u2019s authorization to deploy National Guard<\/a><\/strong> to the city late last month. A federal judge over the weekend <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/katu.com\/news\/local\/president-donald-trump-administration-orders-texas-national-guard-to-oregon-illinois-governor-tina-kotek-says#\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/katu.com\/news\/local\/president-donald-trump-administration-orders-texas-national-guard-to-oregon-illinois-governor-tina-kotek-says#\" class=\"themeColorForLinks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">temporarily blocked the deployment<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Oregon leaders have argued there is no need for troops in Portland because the protests are in the immediate area of the ICE building and that local authorities can handle the situation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PORTLAND, Ore.
