The collection is being released in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026 with a focus on Philadelphia\u2019s role in establishing the nation.\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/dhjhkxawhe8q4.cloudfront.net\/penn-university-press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/22140218\/Greater-Philadelphia-Books-Press-Release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>, Penn Press wrote that the three volumes were a \u201ctrue Philadelphia achievement\u201d possible by \u201ca deeply collaborative effort \u2014 conceived, written, edited, published, and supported by the city\u2019s own scholars, institutions, cultural organizations, and funders.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt reflects not only the richness of the region\u2019s history, but the shared pride and investment of the people who live and work here,\u201d they continued.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The three volumes are titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dhjhkxawhe8q4.cloudfront.net\/penn-university-press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/22140431\/Greater-Philadelphia-vol-1-TOC.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Greater Philadelphia Region<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dhjhkxawhe8q4.cloudfront.net\/penn-university-press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/22140433\/Greater-Philadelphia-vol-2-TOC.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greater Philadelphia and the Nation<\/a>,\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dhjhkxawhe8q4.cloudfront.net\/penn-university-press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/22140437\/Greater-Philadelphia-vol-3-TOC.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greater Philadelphia and the World<\/a>.\u201d The former will delve into the unique boundaries and political networks that constitute the city, the second will investigate Philadelphia\u2019s role in American democracy and citizenship, and the last will shed light on Philadelphia\u2019s impact on immigration and conflict on the global stage.\n<\/p>\n<p>In the release, Penn Press director Mary Francis wrote that the book project supports the institution\u2019s mission of informing its readers of Philadelphia\u2019s history.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBringing together so much fascinating new work from local historians and community partners in these beautiful volumes has been a landmark project,\u201d said Francis. \u201cPenn Press is proud to publish these books that reflect the pride, complexity, and connectedness of the place we call home.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The books were published in association with the <a href=\"https:\/\/philadelphiaencyclopedia.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia<\/a>, a civic project that works to raise awareness of the city\u2019s history and impact.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe set out to create something both timely and timeless \u2014 a resource that people can turn to now as we prepare for the 250th, and one that will endure for generations to come,\u201d Charlene Mires, former Editor-in-Chief of the paper and co-editor of Greater Philadelphia and the Nation, wrote in the release. \u201cThis is more than a history of a city; it\u2019s a story of how Greater Philadelphia helped shape the world.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The book project release will be followed by Penn Press events throughout the fall that celebrate Philadelphia\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Pennsylvanian is an independent, student-run newspaper.
