{"id":286501,"date":"2025-10-08T12:30:29","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T12:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/286501\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T12:30:29","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T12:30:29","slug":"a-fridge-for-every-apartment-in-california-thanks-to-a-new-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/286501\/","title":{"rendered":"A fridge for every apartment in California, thanks to a new law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Starting next year, you won\u2019t have to comb through Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for a decent used refrigerator because your California apartment doesn\u2019t come with one.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/10\/06\/governor-newsom-signs-new-laws-to-help-reduce-costs-for-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Monday Gov. Gavin Newsom signed<\/a> Assembly Bill 628 into law, requiring landlords to equip their rentals with a refrigerator and a stove that are in good working condition. <\/p>\n<p>Assemblymember Tina McKinnor (D-Hawthorne), whose 61st District covers communities from Inglewood to Marina del Rey, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-04-04\/refrigerator-apartment-requirement-california-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously told The Times<\/a> she was inspired to author the bill when she realized refrigerators and stoves were legally labeled as amenities. <\/p>\n<p>A <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/homeless-housing\/story\/2022-05-18\/fridge-los-angeles-apartment-tenants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 Times analysis found that California<\/a> has more apartments on the market without refrigerators than any other state. <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/CA\/text\/AB628\/id\/3192679#:~:text=LEGISLATIVE%20COUNSEL&#039;S%20DIGEST,permanent%20supportive%20housing%2C%20as%20defined.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Existing state law<\/a> requires landlords to maintain certain \u201cstandard characteristics\u201d for a dwelling unit including adequate hot and cold running water, heat, and weather proofing. <\/p>\n<p>McKinnor wanted to include a fridge and stove as necessities for a rental unit to be considered habitable. <\/p>\n<p>Landlords cannot have occupants in a rental \u201cwithout a refrigerator just like they can\u2019t have you in there without hot running water or a heater,\u201d McKinnor said.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new law, landlords must provide a stove capable of generating heat for cooking and a refrigerator capable of safely storing food for new leases starting Jan. 1, 2026. <\/p>\n<p>The costs associated with moving into a new apartment \u2014 first month\u2019s rent and security deposit \u2014 can be a burden for renters, especially in the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zillow.com\/rental-manager\/market-trends\/los-angeles-ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">city of Los Angeles,<\/a> where the average monthly rent is $2,795, about $700 higher than the national average, according to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zillow.com\/rental-manager\/market-trends\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zillow<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>With this law, McKinnor said, renters will have one less payment to think about when moving into their new home. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Starting next year, you won\u2019t have to comb through Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for a decent used refrigerator&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":286502,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5123],"tags":[9097,35560,1582,276,147461,145160,2096,16636,2961,9103,224,2444,5337,147460,75784,104034,10557,70961,60705],"class_list":{"0":"post-286501","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-los-angeles","8":"tag-apartment","9":"tag-assembly-bill","10":"tag-ca","11":"tag-california","12":"tag-cold-running-water","13":"tag-fridge","14":"tag-heat","15":"tag-inglewood","16":"tag-la","17":"tag-landlord","18":"tag-los-angeles","19":"tag-los-angeles-times","20":"tag-losangeles","21":"tag-mckinnor","22":"tag-new-law","23":"tag-refrigerator","24":"tag-rental","25":"tag-stove","26":"tag-thank"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115338557962345849","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/286501","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=286501"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/286501\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/286502"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=286501"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=286501"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=286501"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
