{"id":28655,"date":"2025-07-01T02:03:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T02:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/28655\/"},"modified":"2025-07-01T02:03:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T02:03:12","slug":"major-indicator-of-us-economic-strength-has-worst-run-since-1973","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/28655\/","title":{"rendered":"Major indicator of US economic strength has worst run since 1973"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-668\/alice-wright.html\" class=\"author\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALICE WRIGHT FOR DAILYMAIL.COM<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  14:11 EDT, 30 June 2025   |  Updated:  14:47 EDT, 30 June 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The US dollar \u2014 once a pillar of American economic strength \u2014 is having its worst start to the year since 1973.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">President Trump&#8217;s whipsawing trade and economic policies have prompted investors to sell what is still\u00a0the world&#8217;s dominant currency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">So far in 2025, the dollar index \u2014 which tracks the greenback against major currencies like the euro and pound \u2014 has dropped more than 10 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">That marks the sharpest first-half fall since the collapse of the gold-backed Bretton Woods system more than 50 years ago sent the dollar down 15 percent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It&#8217;s also the dollar&#8217;s weakest showing of any six-month stretch since the 2009 financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;The dollar has become the whipping boy of Trump 2.0&#8217;s erratic policies,&#8217; Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/59c07f63-3331-462b-b9e3-d1bcaea69fce\">told the Financial Times<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Long seen as a global safe haven, the dollar is now losing its luster as investors react to the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/yourmoney\/article-14620311\/fed-chair-warning-wall-street-meltdown-tariff-retirement-savings.html\" rel=\"noopener\">administration&#8217;s unpredictable tariffs<\/a>, the US&#8217;s\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/yourmoney\/article-14828769\/home-depot-founder-warns-markets-recession-indicator.html\" rel=\"noopener\">ballooning federal debt<\/a>, and Trump&#8217;s\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/yourmoney\/article-14850587\/donald-trump-plots-unthinkable-fed-boss-jerome-powell.html\" rel=\"noopener\">attacks on the Federal Reserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">On Monday morning, the dollar dipped another 0.2 percent as the Senate prepared to vote on amendments to Trump&#8217;s sweeping new legislation \u2014 dubbed the &#8216;big beautiful bill&#8217; \u2014 which is projected to add $3.2 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The bill has raised serious concerns about the country&#8217;s borrowing which has in turn led investors to turn away from US Treasury bonds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The dollar&#8217;s decline runs contradictory to the predictions many analysts made at the start of Trump&#8217;s second term.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Wall Street widely expected Trump&#8217;s impending trade war with the world to damage economies abroad, raise <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisismoney.co.uk\/money\/bills\/article-12412155\/What-inflation-falling-means-you.html\" id=\"mol-008e6100-55c3-11f0-b313-5d7cfc284754\">inflation<\/a>\u00a0at home and strengthen the dollar against other currencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;You had a shock in terms of liberation day, in terms of the US policy framework,&#8217; Andrew Balls, from bond group Pimco, told the FT.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While Balls argued the dollar will not be replaced as the world&#8217;s reserve currency it\u00a0 &#8216;doesn&#8217;t mean that you can&#8217;t have a significant weakening.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The dollar is also being pushed lower by expectations that the Fed will cut rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Trump has <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/yourmoney\/article-14779871\/trump-blames-jerome-powell-job-report-worst-hiring-slowdown-years.html\" rel=\"noopener\">heaped pressure on Fed chair Jerome Powell<\/a> to cut rates faster, and has even suggested the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/yourmoney\/article-14850587\/donald-trump-plots-unthinkable-fed-boss-jerome-powell.html\" rel=\"noopener\">nomination of a &#8216;shadow&#8217; a White House spokesperson said last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Markets respond not just to official Fed decisions, but also to hints about future moves \u2014 meaning mixed signals could cause turmoil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;You&#8217;re going to have two people trying to steer the ship: One that&#8217;s actually steering it, and one that&#8217;s the backseat driver,&#8217; Ryan Sweet, chief US economist at Oxford Economics told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A new Fed chair seen as under Trump&#8217;s influence would also concern Wall Street.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Whomever is appointed, the key thing to monitor is whether they are perceived as being a political appointee,&#8217;
