{"id":286697,"date":"2025-10-08T14:13:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T14:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/286697\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T14:13:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T14:13:09","slug":"health-facilities-in-eastern-congo-face-medicine-shortages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/286697\/","title":{"rendered":"Health facilities in eastern Congo face medicine shortages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KINSHASA, Congo (AP) \u2014 Over 200 health facilities in eastern Congo are experiencing shortages of medicines as a result of fighting in the region and a lack of humanitarian funding, the International Committee of the Red Cross said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Red Cross said it assessed 240 health centers and clinics in North and South Kivu, two provinces where the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels made an <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congo-m23-rebels-rwanda-explainer-ba862f76078ab0a4fcd24502612ab602\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unprecedented advance<\/a> earlier this year, further deepening one of the world\u2019s largest humanitarian crises.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulties in crossing front lines in the war-hit regions have prevented health facilities from getting access to medicine, even when it is available, the ICRC said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lives of thousands of people are at stake,\u201d due to the shortage of essential medicine against malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, and other diseases, Fran\u00e7ois Moreillon, the head of the ICRC\u2019s delegation in Congo, said during a news conference Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Many humanitarian organizations supporting health facilities in the region have been forced to reduce their work or shutdown because of a lack of funding, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently, more than 80 per cent of health facilities in the Kivu provinces receive no support from humanitarian partners and are only operational thanks to the remarkable commitment of their staff on both sides of the front lines,\u201d Moreillon said.<\/p>\n<p>Many health workers have also fled the war-torn regions, leading to staff shortages in almost half of the facilities assessed by the ICRC, according to the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Congo\u2019s mineral-rich east has long been battered by fighting involving more than 100 armed groups including the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. The rebels seized <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congo-goma-m23-rebels-northkivu-da924b78ece7e583962f3976544ab7a3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the provincial capitals Goma and Bukavu<\/a> earlier this year, escalating the decades-old conflict.<\/p>\n<p>The rebels\u2019 advance has killed some 3,000 people this year and worsened what was already one of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/goma-congo-m23-rwanda-humanitarian-crisis-displacement-e80e7abf3ecf3623584abee0ef564e67\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the world\u2019s largest humanitarian crises<\/a>, with around 7 million people displaced.
