CBS News\u2019 new editor-in-chief, conservative pundit Bari Weiss, once aspired to replace Meghan McCain on The View, a new report from Variety<\/a> reveals. But despite her best efforts, she failed to secure that job.<\/p>\n

Weiss, 41, was announced as the new head of CBS News on Monday. But before rising to those esteemed journalistic heights, there was a significant bump in the road for the self-described \u201cradical centrist,\u201d when she auditioned for The View chair reserved for the show\u2019s most right-leaning co-host. The search for the latest in a long line of lone conservatives was on in 2021, when Meghan McCain exited the show after several on and off-air altercations with her co-hosts. <\/p>\n

While Variety reports that Weiss lost out on the spot because she didn\u2019t test well with audiences who chafed at her politics, an ABC insider tells The Daily Beast that it was her physical appearance that led the network to hire former Trump aide Alyssa Farah Griffin instead. The Daily reached out to representatives <\/b>for Weiss, McCain, and The View for comment.<\/p>\n

Another source with knowledge says Weiss was never seriously considered for the role because the show was specifically seeking a Republican and Weiss did not identify that way explicitly.<\/p>\n

According to Variety, Weiss \u201cdidn\u2019t test well with audiences, who didn\u2019t understand her centrist-right contrarian politics\u201d and \u201cher focus group scores were so low that she wasn\u2019t invited back to guest host.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weiss\u2019 agents campaigned aggressively to get her the spot on the show to no avail, but the chain of events ultimately worked out quite well for Weiss, who became one of the most influential women in journalism with CBS\u2019 announcement on Monday. Her appointment also comes with the $150 million acquisition of Weiss\u2019 site The Free Press\u2014and if all goes to plan for Paramount<\/a>, she could eventually also lead CNN. According to Variety, Weiss still longs to be on camera, and tried to negotiate as much in her talks to join CBS.<\/p>\n

The former guest host\u2019s time on The View was not without memorable moments. During her last appearance on the show in October 2020<\/a>, Weiss went up against co-host Sunny Hostin over \u201ccancel culture,\u201d which Weiss declared was \u201cwrong and deeply un-American.\u201d She holds those and many other views that endear her to proponents of Trump\u2019s MAGA ideology, as she\u2019s often decried DEI<\/a> and \u201cthe woke left\u201d <\/a>with her website and beyond.<\/p>\n

Some have balked at Weiss\u2019 appointment, as she\u2019s historically pro-Israel<\/a>\u2014putting her at odds with some of CBS\u2019 pro-Palestinian staff\u2014and has also \u201cnever worked in a newsroom traditionally in the way that she\u2019s going to,\u201d one former New York Times colleague of hers told Variety.
