{"id":287230,"date":"2025-10-08T18:58:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T18:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/287230\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T18:58:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T18:58:11","slug":"people-are-eager-to-rent-nycs-crypto-torture-townhouse-for-75k-a-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/287230\/","title":{"rendered":"People are eager to rent NYC&#8217;s crypto \u2018Torture Townhouse\u2019 for $75K a month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even a bloody crime can\u2019t cool off the hot Soho real estate market. <\/p>\n<p>The posh Prince Street \u201cHouse of Horrors\u201d where a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/11\/us-news\/crypto-bros-ex-fiancee-alleged-he-threatened-to-kill-held-her-captive-months-before-nyc-torture-house-bust-report-reveals-armed-and-dangerous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crypto bros kidnapped and tortured <\/a>an Italian businessman is getting a flood of interest from would-be renters, a property agent said \u2014 though they may have to wait, as the accused criminals still hold the lease.<\/p>\n<p>Neither the $75,000-per month rent nor the condition of the floors \u2014 which are reportedly still spattered with blood \u2014 have stopped dozens of property-hungry, would-be tenants from trying to snatch up the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/28\/us-news\/photos-show-inside-ritzy-nyc-townhouse-where-businessman-was-allegedly-tortured-by-cypto-bigwigs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prime digs at 38 Prince Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>House hunters are sniffing around 38 Prince Street in spite of the alleged torture that took place inside. Kevin C Downs forThe New York Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had several [inquiries], but I have three who have asked to take it over if they could,\u201d said Brandon Trentham, the Compass broker in charge of the townhouse, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>But there is a big wrench in the plans of any would-be renters. <\/p>\n<p>Suspects William Duplessie and John Woeltz signed a one-year lease for the eight-bedroom townhouse with Trentham back in April, just one month before they allegedly chained Italian crypto trader Michael Valentino Teofrasto Carturan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/29\/us-news\/italian-crypto-torture-victim-returned-to-nyc-to-reclaim-stolen-bitcoin-from-thieves-who-then-held-him-hostage-for-weeks-da\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inside and tortured him<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 including with a chainsaw \u2014 for his Bitcoin password.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>They have continued to pay the $75,000-per-month dues, despite the fact that Duplessie has made a Manhattan jail cell his home for the past several months. <\/p>\n<p>Woeltz was sprung after posting an $1 million bail, though it\u2019s not clear if he returned to 38 Prince Street.<\/p>\n<p>That hasn\u2019t stopped prospective tenants from trying to take over the lease, which is not up until the end of March.<\/p>\n<p>The five-story townhouse is the former west wing of the Convent of the Basilica of St. Patrick\u2019s Old Cathedral. Paul Martinka<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe place is not available, so that\u2019s the whole thing. If it was, I\u2019m sure we could get something immediately, but the tenants have the place until next year,\u201d Trentham said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonally, I think it\u2019s one of the nicest townhouses in all of downtown. It\u2019s just the highest, highest quality. There\u2019s nothing like it in Soho, that\u2019s for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trentham could not say whether the prospective clients are drawn to the alleged barbarity that took place inside the townhouse or to its historic charm.<\/p>\n<p>Once upon a time, the alleged torture chambers served as the west wing of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/01\/08\/soho-townhouse-that-was-a-convent-to-list-for-65k-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Convent of the Basilica of St. Patrick\u2019s Old Cathedral.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>William Duplessie, left, and John Woeltz allegedly held an Italian crypto investor captive for more than two weeks in hopes of getting his wallet password. Steven Hirsch<\/p>\n<p>The pair were only inside the rental for a month before they were busted.<\/p>\n<p>The torture townhouse boasts views of the church gardens, original round windows and the vaulted high ceiling of the original church beams,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.compass.com\/listing\/38-prince-street-manhattan-ny-10012\/1506636377084089097\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> according to a listing.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is possible that the crypto pair might abandon the lease early, as movers were seen whisking away lavish furniture, such as $1,000 Aeron desk chairs and a H\u00e4stens mattress, which retails for up to $40,000, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curbed.com\/article\/crypto-townhouse-torture-nyc-soho-real-estate-interest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> according to Curbed<\/a>, which first reported on the interest in the townhouse.<\/p>\n<p>One witness told the outlet the movers sold him a pair of Durango Rebel boots with the American flag printed on the side because he wanted to own a little piece of history.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The Soho townhouse was at the center of the sensational case last spring when a bloodied and barefooted Carturan stumbled out of the front door and flagged down cops, saying he had been held captive inside the ritzy digs for more than two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Duplessie and Woeltz allegedly bound the millionaire with an electric cord, Tased his feet while they were submerged in water, pistol-whipped him, forced him to take cocaine and threatened to cut off his limbs with an electric chainsaw.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the home, cops found multiple Polaroid photos showing the torture, including one of Carturan bound to a chair with a gun pointed at his head.<\/p>\n<p>The townhouse rents for $75,000 per month. Melanie Marich\/NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for Woeltz and Duplessie have argued that Carturan\u2019s weeks-long ordeal was part of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/23\/us-news\/accused-nyc-crypto-bro-kidnappers-granted-1m-bail-but-judge-warns-they-cant-pay-in-bitcoin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bizarre, but consensual party atmosphere<\/a>\u00a0in the townhouse, likening it to a \u201clong running frat party\u201d in which the businessman was essentially being hazed.<\/p>\n<p>The pair were known for throwing lavish parties during their one-month stint at the townhouse.<\/p>\n<p>Woeltz and Duplessie both have pleaded not guilty and are due back in court Oct. 15.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys for the pair did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Even a bloody crime can\u2019t cool off the hot Soho real estate market.
