DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. \u2014 The target horsepower for engines in the NASCAR Cup Series on road courses and ovals less than 1.5 miles in length will increase next season.<\/p>\n
The NASCAR competition department confirmed Wednesday that horsepower will increase to 750 from the 670-horsepower standard.<\/p>\n
The move came after a demand from drivers and fans to increase the power in the Next Gen race car program.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would say, like any other change that we are considering to the cars, we listen to the fans a lot,\u201d said John Probst, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. \u201cWe listen to the drivers. We have stakeholders in the broadcast, OEM (manufacturers) and team competition and team business folks, so there\u2019s always no shortage of feedback that we get. Our fans are very passionate, they provide very candid feedback, so that all is very important to us.\u201d<\/p>\n
The tracks where the change will be in place will be Circuit of The Americas, Watkins Glen Int\u2019l, San Diego, Sonoma Raceway , Charlotte Roval, Bowman Gray Stadium, Phoenix Raceway, Darlington Raceway, Martinsville Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway , Dover Motor Speedway, Nashville Superspeedway, North Wilkesboro Speedway, Iowa Speedway, Richmond Raceway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway and World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.<\/p>\n
