I’m told they’d be interested. Washington too.

I also view NYR as a real possibility, with some cap clearance required. Might add cap-strapped TB as a longshot.

I don’t expect an 11th hour #NHLJets extension.

— Murat Ates (@WPGMurat) June 30, 2025

“There’s been a lot of UFA smoke around Carolina [with Ehlers],” Ates tweeted. “I’m told they’d be interested. Washington too.”

Ahead of the NHL Draft on Friday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman also suggested the Capitals could be a fit for Ehlers on his podcast 32 Thoughts. He, too, cited Carolina as a likely destination and also threw the Columbus Blue Jackets into the mix.

“I think a lot of people are pointing at Carolina for him,” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if — Washington’s looking for a scoring winger; it would be harder for them to do, but he makes a lot of sense there. Again, people kind of wonder about Columbus a bit with all their cap room.”

Ehlers, 29, recorded 63 points (24g, 39a) in 69 games last season, notching his fourth career 60-point campaign. He ranked third in regular-season scoring on the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Jets before adding seven points (5g, 2a) in eight playoff games. He would likely slot into the Caps’ top-six, where his speed and scoring talent could make an immediate impact.

Washington currently has $6.95 million in cap space to work with after signing trade acquisitions Justin Sourdif and Declan Chisholm (though pending RFA Hendrix Lapierre has yet to ink a contract), and president of hockey operations Brian MacLellan said in May that the Capitals were “willing to be aggressive” in the offseason. General manager Chris Patrick told reporters this week that the Caps are open to signing a major, pricey free agent with their available cap space, although they may still opt to spread that money among several less expensive players instead.

“We’re looking at both,” he said Saturday. “So that’s the tricky part, right? Because if you chase one thing down, you might miss on other things. You chase a big horse down, you miss on him, and then maybe some of the smaller things you want to do are gone.”

With the salary cap jumping $7.5 million, however, plenty of teams have room to spare, and the Capitals may end up outbid for Ehlers in an expensive free-agent market. The Hurricanes, in particular, have a whopping $26.7 million in cap space, providing them opportunities to take significant swings on contracts.

“Carolina’s had interest in Ehlers before, and I think a lot of people are looking at them and the cap room they have and their willingness to spend, and they think they’ll be a very significant contender for them,” Friedman noted.

Though free agency will open at noon on Tuesday, Ates noted that Ehlers may take some time to test the open market before deciding on a team.

“I’m not sure if today’s pre-UFA action changes anything for Ehlers, but my expectation has been he takes his time to size things up on July 1,” he wrote Monday. “That is: He might not be an 11:01 AM CT type of signing. We’ll see.”

Winnipeg Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers is one of the biggest free-agent targets this summer, and the Washington Capitals…

[42
293,62,67,132,68
0":"post-28747","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-nhl","8":"tag-nhl","9":"tag-sports","10":"tag-united-states","11":"tag-unitedstates","12":"tag-us
["GET
