San Antonio \u2014 After weeks in the hospital recovering from surgeries, 84-year-old Kent Bell was finally home with his wife, Debra. Their joy quickly turned to terror.<\/p>\n
Just minutes after arriving, Kent\u2019s surgical incision split open \u2014 blood pouring across their foyer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was so, so scared that I was going to lose my husband right here in our home,\u201d Debra recalled.<\/p>\n
In panic, she turned to her neighbor, Jessica Vargas. The caretaker, who looks after her elderly father, grabbed an ACE bandage and applied pressure to stop the bleeding until paramedics arrived.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is my hero. She is Kent\u2019s hero. Children have superheroes, and adults can have superheroes too. And Jessica Vargas is our superhero,\u201d Debra said.<\/p>\n
Kent lost two pints of blood that day. He remains in recovery after multiple surgeries to save his leg \u2014 but he made sure Jessica heard his gratitude.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou saved my life. You saved me from bleeding to death. I\u2019m forever indebted to you,\u201d Kent said in a recorded message.<\/p>\n
