(WTVD) &#8212; As central North Carolina farmers begin to harvest soybeans, the world&#8217;s largest buyer of the beans is looking elsewhere to purchase them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Soybeans have <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/soybean-farmers-caught-looming-crisis-us-trade-war\/story?id=125943171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">become the latest victim of a trade war with China<\/a>, as the U.S. and China enact tariffs on goods from each respective country.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"HsNzY JnYwf jsU UoVV WtEci dSKvB seFhp pUIMW daMmF FuEs NIUdb ipdub VcjIK iGXXi NAxPP DTNap yoKit gMRXb \" data-testid=\"prism-quote\">\n<p>We need all the markets we can get.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon Batten, Triple B Farms<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Brandon Batten is one of the owners of his family&#8217;s farm, Triple B Farms, in Four Oaks, which is in Johnston County.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA hsDdd DbOXS oklLN GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"hsDdd NDJZt sJeUN IJwXl vBqtr KrDt itslR WAUrb hakZw HlUVI \" data-testid=\"prism-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/17966316_SoyBeanFarm2.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The family is celebrating the farm&#8217;s 40th anniversary this year as questions linger over who will take the place of Chinese buyers of their soy crop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;We need all the markets we can get,&#8221; said Batten. &#8220;China is a huge consumer of everything. Beans are big. Not buying any beans has a tremendous impact on U.S. agriculture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Batten says they grow a number of other crops like wheat, corn, and rye on their farms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">He says they noticed China stopped buying other crops as well, specifically tobacco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;If one&#8217;s having a bad year, the rest can kind of make up,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But when they all start having that pressure from losing a market the size of China, is when you really see the effects start to take its toll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">China&#8217;s backing away from buying U.S. agricultural products is coming at a bad time for farmers in the Tar Heel state and nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;Farmers are pushed to the margin right now. This is true for North Carolina and everywhere else in the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Charles Hall from the North Carolina Soybean Producers Association says China buys 60% of soybeans in the world, and 30% of the soybeans grown in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In North Carolina, the soybean industry has an over $1.2 billion economic impact, says Hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">But Hall says as China now turns to Brazil for its soybeans, local demand for soybeans can help North Carolina farmers facing some uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;We&#8217;re relatively protected because we have such great customers here in North Carolina,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We have pigs and we have chickens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Hall says a lot of the soybeans produced in NC are used to make feed for livestock animals across the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Trump Administration says the tariffs on China are <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/05\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-secures-a-historic-trade-win-for-the-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">necessary to ease unfair trade practices and the trade deficit with the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Last week, the Trump Administration also <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/wireStory\/trump-plans-aid-package-us-soybean-farmers-seeking-126226653\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced plans for an aid package to help soybean farmers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">With so much uncertainty, farmers tell Eyewitness News they&#8217;re still worried about their bottom line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">&#8220;We&#8217;re all a little nervous trying to say, are we going to make enough to pay the bills?
