\n\tOn a recent episode of his \u201cFly on the Wall<\/a>\u201d podcast, Dana Carvey<\/a> discussed what it was like returning to \u201cSaturday Night Live<\/a>\u201d to play Joe Biden<\/a>. Carvey said it was \u201cobvious\u201d that the former president was struggling, and that it was \u201cdelicate\u201d to make fun of someone he felt to be \u201ccompromised mentally.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI knew that he was compromised mentally, I mean, it was obvious. But it was a delicate thing in the comedy world,\u201d Carvey said. \u201cThere were a lot of people who did not want to do anything that would kind of ding him in an awkward way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCarvey described the feeling of playing Biden as \u201csurreal\u201d and \u201cbizarre,\u201d but still \u201ca lot of fun.\u201d He said that his goal with his impression was to be funny without being mean-spirited, adding that there were some lines he would not cross.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s the key, if I can do Biden, if I can make Biden funny to everybody, then I am where I want to be,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd to make it funny, it had to be recognizable. And so there were certain things I did not include in my package.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPodcast co-host and fellow \u201cSNL\u201d alum David Spade<\/a> shared his own perspective, explaining that some public figures make otherwise sensitive impressions \u201cfair game.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpade said, \u201cI think it\u2019s easier to make fun of him if he\u2019s the president than if it\u2019s just a 90-whatever-year-old man and just go, \u2018Look at this a\u2013hole.\u2019 So once he\u2019s president, he\u2019s more fair game.
