HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 Parents and coaches with the Southeast Raiders say Law Park 2 in South Park<\/a> has fallen into disrepair \u2014 broken bleachers, an uneven playing surface, and field lights that don\u2019t work \u2014 forcing children ages 4\u201312 to practice in fading daylight and keep games off their home turf.<\/p>\n

Coach Lano Hampton, who played for the Raiders on the same field years ago and now leads the program, says the team has asked the city to repair the lights without success.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re out here with 100 plus kids and it\u2019s a safety issue,\u201d Hampton said. \u201cDo better. We got kids here. The kids are our future. They\u2019re out here doing something positive, so let\u2019s focus on important stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coach Keith Paley says conditions have deteriorated over several years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe used to have tournaments here. Can\u2019t even have tournaments anymore because of the grass\u2026 so high all the time and goalposts falling down,\u201d Paley said. \u201cCity\u2019s priorities? Most definitely. We feel like the stepchildren\u2026 other fields stay cut. They stay lit up.\u201d<\/p>\n

After 2 Helps You<\/a> took the concerns to District D Councilwoman Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz<\/a>, she said she had not previously been aware of the complaints but committed to push for action. <\/p>\n

\u201cI am asking\u2026 for some accountability from the parks department,\u201d Evans-Shabazz said. \u201cThese spaces are meant for people to actively engage. The safety of everyone, particularly our children, is very important.\u201d <\/p>\n

When asked whether the issues will be reviewed, she said: \u201cCertainly will be.\u201d She added: \u201cbut we do ask people to call 311 and then once you call 3-1-1, call the office and give us the service request number. Then we are accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hours after those conversations at City Hall, parents say mowers arrived at Law Park 2 for the first time in months. The grass was cut, but coaches say the core problems remain: no working lights, damaged bleachers, and an unsafe, uneven field that prevents home games.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is our park,\u201d Hampton said. \u201cWe practice here because we don\u2019t have many other options. The kids deserve the same as everybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n
