The mystery around Oklahoma<\/a> quarterback John Mateer\u2019s status for Saturday got a little clearer on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Mateer, recovering from a broken hand that required surgery, has been updated to \u201cprobable\u201d for the Red River Rivalry game against Texas, according to Thursday\u2019s official SEC injury report.<\/p>\n

Mateer, a Little Elm product, suffered a broken bone in his right hand in the Sooners\u2019 win over Auburn on Sept. 20<\/a> and underwent surgery a few days later<\/a>. <\/p>\n

According to a Thursday report from ESPN\u2019s Peter Thamel, Mateer\u2019s pain level and grip on the ball are the two biggest variables for him taking the field on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables hasn\u2019t shed much light<\/a> on the situation in the week leading up to the battle with the Longhorns, reiterating that he\u2019s just following along with what the OU training staff is telling him.<\/p>\n

If Mateer can\u2019t play, it\u2019ll be Frisco Emerson product Michael Hawkins Jr. behind center for the Sooners, Hawkins coming off a four-touchdown performance in a win over Kent State last Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Sooners enter the Cotton Bowl ranked as the No. 6 team in the AP Poll.<\/p>\n
