Dallas City Council Member Adam Bazaldua, who represents Dallas\u2019 District 7 which lies south and east of downtown, on Thursday night, Oct. 9, issued the following statement in response to orders from Gov. Greg Abbott that could force the removal of the rainbow crosswalks on Cedar Springs Road:<\/p>\n
\u201cGovernor Abbott\u2019s recent order demanding that cities remove their rainbow crosswalks, under threat of withheld funding, is nothing short of political bullying. His justification that such crosswalks \u2018incorporate political ideology\u2019 ignores a simple truth: A rainbow is not a political statement. It\u2019s a universal symbol of inclusion, hope and pride in diversity. With no words, no slogans and no agenda attached, how can anyone credibly claim a few colors on a crosswalk constitute ideology? I will not fold to bully tactics, and I hope our city stands firm against the egregious overreach.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe the Governor truly wants to serve Texans, he should focus his attention on the real challenges facing our state, the fact that Texas leads the nation in uninsured residents, that maternal mortality continues to rise, that we face an urgent shortage of mental health resources and that the housing crisis is pushing Texans into homelessness every day.<\/p>\n
\u201cInstead of exercising real leadership to solve real problems that affect real Texans, we have a Governor wasting time and taxpayer resources playing political games. Texans deserve better.\u201d<\/p>\n
