A 78-year-old man who was hit by a truck at a tip has become the ACT’s sixth road fatality this year.<\/p>\n

ACT police said emergency services were called to the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre about 2:45pm on October 1.<\/p>\n

They said the man had been hit by a reversing truck and pushed into the rubbish collection area at the centre.<\/p>\n

He was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and died on Friday.<\/p>\n

“As this location is considered a road-related area and is regularly accessible by the public, this matter is being considered a road fatality and sadly brings the ACT road toll for 2025 to six,” a police statement said.<\/p>\n

The circumstances of the man’s death are being investigated, but at this stage, police do not believe anyone was at fault.<\/p>\n

Detective Acting Sergeant Nathan Smorhun said the man had been “nudged” by the truck at the drop-off point and had fallen into the pit.<\/p>\n

“It looks like the elderly gentleman was near the general waste pit and was unfortunately struck by a light truck that was reversing at the time,” Acting Sergeant Smorhun said.<\/p>\n

“That interaction has caused him to fall into the pit, striking his head, and unfortunately, causing some non-survivable brain injuries.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Acting Sergeant Smorhun said a small wall at the edge of the pit had acted as a “trip” for the man.<\/p>\n

“He’s been nudged by the reversing truck, which has just caused him to trip over that and fall head-first into the pit,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

he said.<\/p>\n

He said the man was at the tip with a family member.<\/p>\n

He added that the driver of the truck had been assisting police with their inquiries.<\/p>\n

“There was no indication that drugs or alcohol [were] involved,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It appears that there’s nobody really at fault for this one \u2014 it just appears to be an unfortunate incident.<\/p>\n

“This brings our death toll for the ACT up to six, which is unfortunately a lot higher than it was a couple of weeks ago.”<\/p>\n
