(Photo by Chris Jennewein\/Times of San Diego)<\/p>\n<p>San Diego Jewish organizations marked the second anniversary of the Oct. 7 invasion of Israel by Hamas with a mixture of sadness for the loss of life and hope that peace in Gaza is finally at hand.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds gathered Thursday evening in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesoundsd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Sound<\/a> at the Del Mar Fairgrounds to hear from Mayor Todd Gloria and Jewish community leaders followed by the multimedia experience of <a href=\"https:\/\/project-heroes.co.il\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project Heroes<\/a>, an Israeli ensemble formed in the wake of the attack.<\/p>\n<p>The event was planned before news broke of the peace deal brokered by President Trump that promises to release all of the hostages still in Hamas captivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time, we are allowing ourselves to contemplate a future \u2014 very soon \u2014 where all our hostages will be home,\u201d said Charlene Seidle, president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jcfsandiego.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jewish Community Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her words were echoed by Mayor Todd Gloria, who told the crowd that \u201cthis news of a long-awaited potential return of hostages to families is an incredible joy to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of San Diego\u2019s sister city of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishinsandiego.org\/shaarhanegev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sha\u2019ar HaNegev<\/a>, Ofir Liebstein, was <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/military\/2023\/10\/07\/head-of-shaar-hanegev-sister-city-of-san-diego-in-israel-killed-in-hamas-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed in the attack<\/a>, and Gloria offered a tribute to his memory \u2014 and insisted that \u201cgoodness, compassion and human connection\u201d will endure even amid tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat hope, and that belief, lives on in the words of a man that many of you knew and loved,\u201d Gloria said.<\/p>\n<p>After the speeches and prayers, the sounds and images of Project Heroes filled the live music venue. <\/p>\n<p>Project Heroes blends live music, songs and videos with documentary scenes dedicated to honoring those who lost their lives on Oct. 7 while saving others. The nonprofit ensemble is currently touring the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria urged those in attendance to \u201cplease stay strong\u201d and \u201chope for those hostages to return in the next few days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Jewish community leaders hold candles in remembrance of the lives lost on Oct. 7, 2023.
