Starr hired Mark Ladner, Mario Batali\u2019s former right hand, who started at sibling spot<a href=\"https:\/\/ny.eater.com\/2017\/2\/9\/14561972\/mark-ladner-mario-carbone-letter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Lupa<\/a> (that Starr also purchased) and rose the ranks to lead the kitchen at what became the Michelin-starred Del Posto. But Babbo also has ghosts to contend with: Batali <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2022\/8\/24\/23319920\/mario-batali-settles-sexual-assault-lawsuits-boston\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exited the company in 2017<\/a> after a sexual harassment scandal. On at least one occasion, Scabby the Union Rat and a few protestors have held \u201cBOYCOTT BABBO\u201d signs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">The rat has come up from D.C., where activists have pushed to unionize workers and filed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonian.com\/2025\/02\/03\/dc-restaurant-workers-allege-intimidation-and-retaliation-for-union-push\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">complaints<\/a> against Starr with the National Labor Relations Board over alleged labor law violations at three of his biggest D.C. restaurants: Starr\u2019s nearly two-year-old French bistro<a href=\"https:\/\/pastisdc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Pastis<\/a>, seven-year-old steakhouse <a href=\"https:\/\/stanselmdc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St. Anselm<\/a> (the original NY locations of each are not involved in any unionization efforts), and <a href=\"https:\/\/lediplomatedc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Le Diplomate<\/a>, Starr\u2019s perennially packed brasserie on 14th Street since 2013.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"_1d77pry1\" href=\"https:\/\/platform.ny.eater.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-09-at-2.50.12%E2%80%AFPM.png?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" data-pswp-height=\"1164\" data-pswp-width=\"1920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\"><img alt=\"\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"fill\" class=\"_1u5z0xk0\" style=\"position:absolute;height:100%;width:100%;left:0;top:0;right:0;bottom:0;color:transparent;background-size:cover;background-position:50% 50%;background-repeat:no-repeat;background-image:url(&quot;data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg' %3E%3Cfilter id='b' color-interpolation-filters='sRGB'%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3CfeColorMatrix values='1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 100 -1' result='s'\/%3E%3CfeFlood x='0' y='0' width='100%25' height='100%25'\/%3E%3CfeComposite operator='out' in='s'\/%3E%3CfeComposite in2='SourceGraphic'\/%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3C\/filter%3E%3Cimage width='100%25' height='100%25' x='0' y='0' preserveAspectRatio='none' style='filter: url(%23b);' href='data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAEAAAABCAQAAAC1HAwCAAAAC0lEQVR42mN8+R8AAtcB6oaHtZcAAAAASUVORK5CYII='\/%3E%3C\/svg%3E&quot;)\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-09-at-2.50.12\u202fPM.png\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Screenshot<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.local25union.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Here 25<\/a> has been targeting these D.C. restaurants since January, alleging \u201cunjust working conditions\u201d like lack of health insurance and sick time. Some workers, along with a D.C. Starr restaurant rep, <a href=\"https:\/\/dc.eater.com\/2025\/2\/21\/24370142\/union-battle-stephen-starr-dc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claim the union<\/a> used \u201ccoercive tactics\u201d to intimidate workers to side with the union particularly at St. Anselm, \u201cpromising immigration assistance in exchange for voting yes \u2026 unfairly and inappropriately influenced\u201d the results. (Pastis staff voted no and the union is still pushing for Le Diplomate, though the staff opted not to hold a vote.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">Now the group has moved north, targeting Babbo. Diners may have to cross or pass picket lines (whether or not they contain actual Starr employees), to enter the restaurant to try Ladner\u2019s cooking, which will feature Babbo classics like the 100-layer lasagna, and beef-cheek ravioli.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">Meanwhile, workers allegedly protesting the unionization efforts have posted a website called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/servingthetruth.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Serving the Truth.\u201d <\/a> \u201cWorkers at Le Diplomate, Osteria Mozza, The Occidental and Pastis have made their choice: no union,\u201d it reads. \u201cIn fact, union interest among workers in three of the four restaurants is so low that UNITE HERE Local 25 has never even asked for a vote.But Unite Here Local 25 continues to push a false story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">According to Benjy Cannon, director of communications at Unite Here 25, which represents 7,000 restaurant, hotel, and casino workers around D.C., the rat appeared because, \u201cI thought it was tasteless and gross that Stephen Starr chose to keep the Babbo name given the accusations against the chef when it was last open. We\u2019re asking New Yorkers to stay away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">Starr, as we know, is no stranger to NYC. He owns <a href=\"https:\/\/lecoucou.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Le Coucou<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/uplandnyc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Upland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/starr-restaurants.com\/restaurants\/la-mercerie\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">La Mercerie<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ny.eater.com\/2024\/11\/14\/24296341\/le-cafe-louis-vuitton-opening-stephen-starr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Le Cafe Louis Vuitton<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pastisnyc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pastis <\/a>(with Keith McNally), and even at legacy <a href=\"https:\/\/buddakannyc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Buddakan<\/a>, he just <a href=\"https:\/\/ny.eater.com\/coming-attractions\/399186\/buddakan-mission-chinese-danny-bowien-new-york-city\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">switched up the chef to Danny Bowien<\/a> of Mission Chinese fame. In New York, he\u2019s received little scrutiny over his labor practices \u2013 or if he has, he has come out unscathed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">Notably, the United Here protestors have not alleged wrongdoing at Babbo. Their objections remain with Batali\u2019s history and Starr\u2019s D.C. restaurants. In a release, the group said, \u201cStephen Starr is reviving Babbo in NYC years after its closure following allegations of sexual harassment against its previous chef, Mario Batali, when it was under different management,\u201d continuing to cite only claims tied to Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">\u201cOne cook at Starr\u2019s Pastis claimed a supervising chef grabbed her neck from behind and shook her,\u201d the release states, adding, \u201cStephen Starr should take a stand against sexual harassment instead he abdicated responsibility saying in an anti-union [message] that sexual harassment is everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">\u201cThe Babbo boycott is an expansion of a months-long boycott of STARR-operated restaurants in Washington, D.C \u2013 Le Diplomate, The Occidental, and Osteria Mozza over the company\u2019s union-busting,\u201d the group continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">Cannon says he expects the rat will make ongoing appearances outside Babbo.
