{"id":292387,"date":"2025-10-10T16:34:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T16:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/292387\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T16:34:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T16:34:16","slug":"mysterious-anomaly-in-pacific-ocean-hints-at-nearby-supernova-explosion-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/292387\/","title":{"rendered":"Mysterious Anomaly in Pacific Ocean Hints at Nearby Supernova Explosion : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An unexpected deep-sea deposit may be the smoking gun from a nearby star that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/supernova-reveals-what-the-inside-of-a-star-really-looks-like\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exploded as a supernova<\/a> in the relatively recent past.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, a team of scientists in Germany discovered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mysterious-radioactive-anomaly-discovered-deep-under-the-pacific-ocean\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strange spike in beryllium-10<\/a> in the seafloor of the Pacific Ocean. This radioactive isotope forms when cosmic rays strike Earth&#8217;s atmosphere. From there it falls, sinks and settles on the seafloor, before becoming embedded in the crust.<\/p>\n<p>Since the beryllium-10 rain is fairly constant across the planet, the rocky record should be similarly uniform. But the team found a strange concentration that dated to about 10 million years ago. The researchers used data from the European Space Agency&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Gaia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaia survey<\/a> to trace the paths of the Sun and 2,725 nearby star clusters over the past 20 million years, and calculate how many supernovae should occur, on average, in those clusters over that time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/BerylliumBlip-1-642x522.png\" alt=\"Beryllium Blip\" width=\"642\" height=\"522\" class=\"wp-image-151852 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The beryllium-10 spike in Pacific Ocean ferromanganese crusts between 9 and 12 million years ago. (Koll et al., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-024-55662-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nature Communications<\/a>, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>They found that there was about a 68 percent chance of a star exploding within 326 light-years of the Sun within a million years of the beryllium-10 spike. The team also identified 19 clusters that each had more than 1 percent chance of a supernova within that distance, around the time of the anomaly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our results support the possibility of a supernova origin for the beryllium-10 anomaly,&#8221; the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1051\/0004-6361\/202556253\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">team writes<\/a> in their paper.<\/p>\n<p>The case isn&#8217;t closed just yet, though. If the spike is located only in some parts of the Pacific Ocean, that suggests some local force, such as a change in ocean currents, concentrated beryllium-10 there.
