Eric Owusu, a skeleton athlete with Ghana in his heart, is proving that even the most uncommon dreams are worth fighting for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Owusu\u2019s journey has been anything but ordinary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s something I told my athlete just walking in the dark and figuring it out,\u201d Owusu said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Left in Ghana at age three, bullied in school, and homeless during a freezing Chicago winter, Owusu never stopped chasing his Olympic dream.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cSo the main destination ever since I was 15 years old was the Olympics,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Initially, Owusu\u2019s vision was set on gymnastics when he moved to the United States at age eight. But after suffering two ruptured Achilles tendons, experiencing homelessness in his car, and dealing with an infected Achilles, he kept moving forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cSo after two ruptured Achilles, being homeless in my car, dealing with an infected Achilles\u2026\u201d Owusu recounted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Now, he\u2019s training in the high-speed winter sport of skeleton, where athletes sprint, dive headfirst onto a sled, and rocket down icy tracks at speeds up to 80 miles an hour, pulling up to five G\u2019s of force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Demonstrating the difficulty of the sport, Owusu said, \u201cSo I have to run really fast and mount, and then I\u2019m in.\u201d He added, \u201cI put my chest and then I use my spikes\u201d to stop after a run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The sport is typically dominated by cold-weather countries. But Owusu is doing it for Ghana and for those who\u2019ve been overlooked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThe more experience I got, I was like I really can\u2019t do this even if I didn\u2019t have the resources,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">To help others like him, Owusu founded UncommonDreams Inc., a nonprofit that supports underfunded and underrepresented athletes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cSo that way when I become and create a legacy, I can find the way for other uncommon athletes as well,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Owusu\u2019s goal is to become the second Ghanaian skeleton athlete to compete in the Winter Olympics in 2026.
