Rene\u00e9 Rapp<\/a> doesn\u2019t give a f\u2014.<\/p>\n On Wednesday, Oct. 1, the self-assured 25-year-old pop star lit up Brooklyn\u2019s Barclays Center<\/a> bringing a fiery, attitude-packed (yet fun!) show to the 19,000-seat venue as part of her ongoing \u2018Bite Me Tour.\u2019<\/p>\n Rapp\u2019s confidence is something her fans \u201cRappers\u201d know all \u201cToo Well\u201d \u2013 whether making raunchy comments on podcasts, interviews, social media or well, through her song lyrics, she radiates an infectious, too-cool-for-school energy \u2014 and we can confirm the vocally-gifted songstress maintains that coolheaded poise while onstage.<\/p>\n The look she served for the evening was a healthy mix of rock \u2018n roll with a touch of Y2K rebel vibes. Ripped black tights, knee high boots, dark-lined eyes, and crimped voluminous hair that she whipped back and forth all night Willow Smith-style paired well with the black-and-white checkered floor and pink tiered star platform stage. The whole display was very much giving a 2000s Avril Lavigne music video\u2026and I wasn\u2019t mad about it one bit.\u00a0<\/p>\n Performance-wise, Rene\u00e9\u2019s duality was on full display as she let her Broadway roots shine through. It\u2019s easy to forget her career started on a Great White Way stage (remember \u201cMean Girls: The Musical\u201d anyone?) before pivoting to pop, but the second you see her command a crowd with nothing but voice, presence and charisma, her theatrical chops are undeniable. She\u2019s a born star.<\/p>\n Since she commanded the spotlight so much, there were no backup dancers accompanying her. The only players onstage were our headliner and the backing band.\u00a0Still, the minimalist show didn\u2019t feel like there was anything missing. When a performer is as magnetic as Rapp, everything else is distracting window dressing. Keeping it simple was the move and Rene\u00e9 knows this better than anyone.\u00a0<\/p>\n As for the music, let me just say the mic was ON. Even as the former Regina George tossed her hair and strutted across the stage, her vocals stayed crisp, powerful and dynamic, whether belting her single \u201cLeave Me Alone\u201d or stripping things down with a cover of Keyshia Cole\u2019s go-for-broken epic \u201cLove.\u201d After singing the final note, the Gen Z artist urged her multigenerational fans to go home and look up the iconic tune if they didn\u2019t know it already. I know I did. What a wallop (that Rapp did justice to).<\/p>\n Before draping herself across the piano for \u201cThat\u2019s So Funny\u201d midway through the concert, Rapp opened up about the song\u2019s meaning: the heartbreak of a friendship breakup, which she admitted can cut even deeper than a romantic one.
