[Photo: UT Arlington]<\/p>\n<p><strong>The University of Texas at Arlington has been awarded nearly $127 million from the UT System Board of Regents to upgrade classrooms, laboratories, and campus infrastructure. The funding is part of a broader strategy to expand UTA\u2019s role in the Dallas-Fort Worth innovation and workforce ecosystem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The three-year allocation, announced in September as UTA marks its 130th anniversary, will come from Permanent University Fund bond proceeds. University leaders said the investment will address deferred maintenance and position UTA for long-term growth as a top-tier research university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investment in UT Arlington comes at a pivotal moment,\u201d UTA President Jennifer Cowley said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>She added that support from the Board of Regents, Chairman Kevin Eltife, and Chancellor James B. Milliken will allow the university to renew its facilities in ways that benefit faculty, students, and UTA\u2019s broader role as a leading research institution.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-224697\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/jennifer-cowley-meet-the-president-e1662413749486-300x295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"218\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-224697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UTA President Jennifer Cowley<\/p>\n<p>UTA holds a Carnegie R1 classification, a designation reserved for institutions with the highest levels of research activity. The university is one of only 187 schools nationwide\u2014and among the top 5%\u2014to have earned the status in 2025. In March, the university called the reaffirmation a milestone, having first achieved R1 status in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>As part of its growing research enterprise, UTA is focusing on national and state priorities. In March, Cowley highlighted areas of high-impact research, including semiconductor technology, battery storage, AI <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasinnovates.com\/doe-funded-uta-project-tackles-cooling-costs-in-ai-data-center-boom\/#:~:text=DOE%2DFunded%20UTA%20Project%20Tackles,how%20data%20centers%20are%20cooled.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data centers<\/a>, energy grids, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasinnovates.com\/3-1-million-nih-grant-backs-utas-ai-push-in-antibody-drug-discovery\/#:~:text=$3.1%20Million%20NIH%20Grant%20Backs,Antibody%20Drug%20Discovery%20%C2%BB%20Dallas%20Innovates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat sets UT Arlington apart from other institutions is our ability to pursue and produce scientific research that is on the leading edge,\u201d she said at the time. \u201cWe are advancing critical research across our nine colleges and schools right here in Arlington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cumulative economic impact<\/p>\n<p>That research activity has tangible economic returns, according to the university. Between 2018 and 2023, UT Arlington said it contributed more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uta.edu\/news\/news-releases\/2024\/10\/11\/uta-research-contributed-to-us-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$300 million to the national economy<\/a> through its research programs. In 2024, its research activity <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasinnovates.com\/uta-reports-59m-national-economic-impact-from-research-activity\/#:~:text=Miller%2C%20vice%20president%20for%20research,and%20state%20and%20local%20governments.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contributed $59 million to the national economy<\/a>, up 39% from 2023, according to a report from the Institute for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS) earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>More broadly, UTA says its cumulative economic impact in Texas stands at $28.8 billion annually, driven by university operations, research, and its alumni network.<\/p>\n<p>In Texas, the cumulative impact of the university and its large alumni base generates an annual economic impact of $28.8 billion, according to UT Arlington. With approximately 270,000 alumni, many of whom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uta.edu\/news\/news-releases\/2025\/02\/19\/study-uta-research-drives-widespread-economic-impact#:~:text=University&#039;s%20research%20programs%20boost%20local,Innovation%20and%20Science%20(IRIS).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hold leadership roles at the 21 Fortune 500<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uta.edu\/news\/news-releases\/2025\/02\/19\/study-uta-research-drives-widespread-economic-impact#:~:text=University&#039;s%20research%20programs%20boost%20local,Innovation%20and%20Science%20(IRIS).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">companies<\/a> based in North Texas, the university\u2019s contributions stretch across industries and regions.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.prod.web.uta.edu\/-\/media\/project\/website\/campus-ops\/economic-development\/perryman-impact-of-the-university-of-texas-at-arlington-2-10-2023.pdf#:~:text=The%20Perryman%20Group%20estimates%20that%20operations%20of,billion%20in%20gross%20product%20and%2022%2C919%20jobs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Perryman report<\/a> previously estimated the number at $27 billion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Ambition and excellence\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UTA enrolls more than 41,000 students and is the second-largest campus in the UT System.<\/p>\n<p>Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife said the investment \u201censures UTA\u2019s facilities reflect its ambition and excellence, supporting students, faculty, and the North Texas community for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investment also comes as the region continues to expand its tech and STEM workforce. According to a 2025 CompTIA report, Dallas-Fort Worth\u2019s tech workforce is pegged at 378,945, positioning it as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lecbyo.files.cmp.optimizely.com\/download\/808ea63053b111f08b6ca695fc160b1a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second-largest metropolitan tech hub<\/a> by net tech employment. A <a href=\"https:\/\/economicengine.utdallas.edu\/download\/The_Connection_20210224.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UT Dallas economic report<\/a> projects the region will add roughly 50,000 new STEM jobs between 2019 and 2029.<\/p>\n<p>UTA\u2019s allocation is part of a larger capital investment effort across the UT System. It follows a nearly $186 million commitment to the University of Texas at San Antonio for campus modernization. <\/p>\n<p>UTA\u2019s student publication, The Shorthorn, recently highlighted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theshorthorn.com\/news\/campus\/130-years-of-uta-history-in-10-buildings\/article_9b859625-6b1d-4795-860b-329efcf1e322.html#:~:text=The%20Science%20and%20Engineering%20Innovation%20and%20Research%20Building%20opened%20in,Future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">130 years of UTA history in 10 landmark buildings<\/a>.
