The City of San Antonio wants to empower residents to recycle a common household item that can pose a threat to human health or the environment\u00a0when no longer useful.<\/p>\n

This Saturday, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., the Solid Waste Management Department and the Fire Department are holding a family friendly recycling drive called Battery Fest. The event will take place at the Southeast Service Center, 1318 SE Loop 410 Access Road and allow residents to safely dispose of old batteries. <\/p>\n

The event coincides with Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 5-11, and allows both departments to educate the community on fire safety and proper disposal of harmful materials. <\/p>\n

Batteries are classified as hazardous materials due to the chemicals they contain, including sulfuric acid, mercury and lithium. Old batteries may leak these toxins or cause fires when not properly stored or recycled.<\/p>\n

All attendees will receive one event pass per battery they bring for recycling. The passes can be exchanged to play games, participate in activities or purchase food. The event also will include live music and giveaways.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, the Fire Department will bring along operational fire trucks and the Sparky, the national fire safety mascot. Solid Waste Management will bring it own mascots, Curby, Glenda and Bart \u2014 personifications of the city\u2019s trash, recycling and compost bins.<\/p>\n

The city hosted the first leg of the event on Oct. 4, collecting 766 pounds of batteries for recycling. This time, they hope to top that number.\u00a0<\/p>\n
