The award will be presented at the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History\u2019s gala on Nov. 5.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSupporting students\u2019 success and fostering an inclusive community dedicated to free inquiry and educational excellence has always been at the heart of my work,\u201d Gutmann wrote in a statement to The Daily Pennsylvanian. \u201cI simply adore helping young people thrive, preparing them to lead with purpose and passion, and I love staying in touch with so many Penn graduates.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Gutmann emphasized that her most meaningful initiatives as Penn\u2019s eighth president included her all-grant financial aid policy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/article\/2013\/08\/penn-compact-2020-amy-gutmann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Penn Compact<\/a> \u2014 a program promoting access to higher education, interdisciplinary knowledge, and global engagement. The programs \u201creflect both the American promise and the Jewish tradition,\u201d Gutmann wrote.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Through these programs, Penn tripled the number of first-generation students and created the President\u2019s Engagement and Innovation Prizes, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/article\/2019\/10\/paideia-program-gutmann-leadership-penn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Penn Paideia Program<\/a>, Penn Park, and two undergraduate college houses.\n<\/p>\n<p>Gutmann\u2019s work as a scholar and ambassador has earned her recognition from peers, including former Board of Trustees Chair and former U.S. ambassador to Canada David L. Cohen.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer career is a masterclass in visionary leadership, fierce intellect, and moral courage,\u201d Cohen said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/ambassador-amy-gutmann--scholar-diplomat-leader-and-penn-president-emerita--selected-to-receive-only-in-america-award-for-contributions-to-jewish-american-community-302486673.html#:~:text=Recent%20Only%20in%20America%C2%AE,Wolf%20Blitzer%3B%20Philadelphia%20Flyers%20owner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">press release<\/a> announcing the award. \u201cFrom leading one of America\u2019s greatest universities to representing our nation in Germany, she has consistently elevated dialogue, advanced equity, and honored her heritage.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Gutmann expressed her pride in \u201cexpanding access to education,\u201d calling the initiatives \u201cdeeply meaningful\u201d to her \u201cas the daughter of a Jewish refugee and as a first-generation college graduate.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Gutmann\u2019s father fled Germany in 1934 and settled in the United States, seeking refuge from Nazi persecution. She is deeply connected to Philadelphia, while taking a national and global approach to her work.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>In August 2024, Gutmann <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/article\/2024\/08\/penn-amy-gutmann-preident-return-annenberg-professor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">returned to Penn<\/a> as a professor at the Annenberg School for Communication and shared some advice for students with the DP.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways lead with utmost integrity, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering commitment to serve others,\u201d Gutmann wrote.
