{"id":29428,"date":"2025-07-01T08:55:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T08:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/29428\/"},"modified":"2025-07-01T08:55:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T08:55:13","slug":"trump-administration-sues-los-angeles-over-sanctuary-city-policies-daily-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/29428\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump administration sues Los Angeles over sanctuary city policies \u2013 Daily News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Trump administration on Monday sued the City of Los Angeles, accusing it of violating federal law with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2025\/06\/27\/ice-raids-in-los-angeles-leave-immigrants-afraid-to-report-discrimination\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201csanctuary city\u201d policies<\/a> by discriminating against immigration authorities and restricting cooperation granted to other law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles, claims sanctuary laws are illegal and \u201cobstruct the Federal Government\u2019s enforcement of federal immigration law and impede consultation and communication between federal, state, and local law enforcement officials that is necessary for federal officials to carry out federal immigration law and keep Americans safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The filing asks the court to declare Los Angeles\u2019 policies invalid under the Constitution\u2019s Supremacy Clause, which the suit says \u201cprohibits the city and its officials from obstructing the federal government\u2019s ability to enforce laws that Congress has enacted or to take actions entrusted to it by the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The City Attorney\u2019s Office responded to the lawsuit on Monday afternoon by defending the Sanctuary City Ordinance, which it said was carefully written to comply with federal law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City of Los Angeles ordinance limiting the use of City resources for federal immigration enforcement was carefully drafted and fully complies with federal law and constitutional principles,\u201d the office said in a statement. \u201cThe Constitution and federal law both allow the federal government to regulate immigration, but the reserved power of the state and the people including under the Tenth amendment ensures our ability to defend the constitutionality of our ordinances and policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It added: \u201cOur City remains committed to standing up for our constitutional rights and the rights of our residents. (AP Photo\/Damian Dovarganes)\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\" class=\"icon-enlarge mng-gallery-fullscreen-expand\" aria-label=\"Expand fullscreen slideshow\">Expand<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, who co-authored the Sanctuary City Ordinance with Council members Nithya Raman and Eunisses Hernandez, defended the policy Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump is tearing families apart and he\u2019s trying to force every city and town to help him carry out his white nationalist agenda,\u201d he said. \u201cThis baseless lawsuit only gets one thing right \u2014 we refuse to stand by and let Donald Trump deport innocent families. We\u2019re going to do everything within our power to keep families together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hernandez also criticized the lawsuit, calling it \u201canother senseless provocation by the Trump administration to try to bully Los Angeles into complying with their authoritarian agenda\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are scare tactics meant to dissuade us from protecting our communities from being terrorized,\u201d she said. \u201cWe won\u2019t stand silently by as they rip families apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena, also condemned the lawsuit Monday, calling it \u201can attempt to federalize our local law enforcement to participate in Trump\u2019s outrageous mass ICE raids,\u201d and President Trump\u2019s \u201clatest attempt to punish Californians for standing up to his cruel and chaotic agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s mass ICE raids have terrorized neighborhoods, ripped apart families, and trampled on all of our constitutional rights,\u201d she said. \u201cThey have pointed guns at innocent bystanders and even arrested U.S. citizens, including one of my constituents, simply for documenting these raids. This lawsuit is yet another step toward authoritarianism that the administration hopes will be a distraction from Republicans ramming a bill through Congress that would strip health coverage from 17 million Americans to hand trillions in tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Karen Bass\u2019s office, and City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles has been a battleground for the Trump administration\u2019s clashes with Democrats over immigration. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2024\/11\/13\/la-releases-draft-of-sanctuary-city-ordinance-meant-to-counter-trump-immigration-moves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The city\u2019s sanctuary city ordinance<\/a>, which prohibits any city resources or personnel from being used to help federal enforcement of immigration laws, was approved by the City Council in 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2024\/11\/12\/la-mayor-bass-works-to-expedite-the-release-of-a-sanctuary-city-ordinance\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">but finalized<\/a> last November after President Trump\u2019s election victory.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Bass described the policy as an urgent measure to protect vulnerable residents. \u201cEspecially in the face of growing threats to the immigrant communities here in Los Angeles, I stand with the people of this city,\u201d she said. \u201cThis moment demands urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tensions have further spiked in recent weeks between the federal government and local officials as the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a series of high-profile raids across Los Angeles. The operations have drawn large protests, with demonstrators targeting government buildings and sometimes clashing with federal agents and local law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Bass has condemned violent demonstrators while also accusing the Trump administration of provoking unrest and misrepresenting the city\u2019s response. She has defended the actions of local law enforcement and denied claims that city or state leaders encouraged the violence.<\/p>\n<p>The City Council is scheduled to consider several resolutions on Tuesday responding to the recent ICE raids and protests. (AP Photo\/Damian Dovarganes)\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\" class=\"icon-enlarge mng-gallery-fullscreen-expand\" aria-label=\"Expand fullscreen slideshow\">Expand<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a statement to Fox News, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2025\/01\/15\/bondi-faces-skeptical-democrats-confirmation-hearing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Attorney General Pam Bondi<\/a> blamed sanctuary policies for the recent violence surrounding federal immigration raids in the Southland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSanctuary policies were the driving cause of the violence, chaos, and attacks on law enforcement that Americans recently witnessed in Los Angeles,\u201d she said. \u201cJurisdictions like Los Angeles that flout federal law by prioritizing illegal aliens over American citizens are undermining law enforcement at every level \u2014 it ends under President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the federal government, then-candidate Donald J. Trump campaigned and won the presidential election in 2024 \u201con a platform of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2025\/06\/26\/what-gov-gavin-newsoms-latest-feud-with-president-donald-trump-could-signal-for-2028\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deporting the millions of illegal immigrants<\/a> the previous administration permitted, through its open borders policy, to enter the country unlawfully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDays after now President Trump won the Nov. 5, 2024 election, the Los Angeles City Council, wishing to thwart the will of the American people regarding deportations, began the process of codifying into law its sanctuary city policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit names L.A.
