Los Angeles city, county and federal government offices will be closed Monday for Indigenous People\u2019s Day and the Columbus Day holiday.<\/p>\n
While the city and county of Los Angeles observe Indigenous People\u2019s Day on the second Monday of October annually, the federal government has made a point this year of declaring it Columbus Day. Federal offices and courts will be closed.<\/p>\n
But the state of California does not observe Columbus Day or Indigenous People\u2019s Day as a state holiday, so criminal and civil courts will remain open on seemingly limited schedules. Schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District will also be open.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Postal Service does not deliver regular mail on the holiday, and post offices will be closed.<\/p>\n
Buses, rail services and Metrolink trains in Los Angeles run on a regular schedule.<\/p>\n
The holiday was first officially celebrated in L.A. in 2018, after the City Council and L.A. County Board of Supervisors voted to replace Columbus Day. More than 100 cities around the country have opted to celebrate Indigenous People\u2019s Day over Columbus Day.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s Indigenous People\u2019s events feature a range of activities, including:<\/p>\n
\u2014 The Getty Center: Celebrating Indigenous People\u2019s Day 2025, with music, comedy, dance performances and poetry from Indigenous artists, Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Getty Center;<\/p>\n
\u2014 2025 Tuxuunga Indigenous Peoples Day, a free community event to highlight Indigenous cultures and practices, Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 12400 Big Tujunga Canyon Road;<\/p>\n
\u2014 San Dimas Canyon Nature Center, a lesson in local tribal history will be given followed by a Native seed planting, Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.;<\/p>\n
\u2014 Indigenous Fashion Collective Events, attendees can shop for clothing, accessories and art from Indigenous designers and makers at a host of curated pop-ups, Autry Museum of the American West, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and<\/p>\n
