Evan Agostini\/Invision\/AP<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood legend Diane Keaton has died at age 79. <\/p>\n<p>The Oscar winner, whose glittering career spanned more than half a century, died Saturday in California, her family confirmed. A cause of death was not disclosed. <\/p>\n<p>Keaton, who rose to fame in the 1970s, starred in hit films including \u201cThe Godfather,\u201d \u201cAnnie Hall,\u201d \u201cBaby Boom,\u201d \u201cFirst Wives Club,\u201d and \u201cSomething\u2019s Gotta Give.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actress \u2014 who never publicly disclosed if she was battling any illness \u2014 last posted to her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/diane_keaton\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram on April 11<\/a>, sharing a photo with her Golden Retriever, Reggie.  She had not been seen publicly in six months. <\/p>\n<p>Keaton, who is pictured last year, died in California, her family confirmed. NBCU Photo Bank\/NBCUniversal via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The vivacious icon was equally known for her off-screen presence, beloved for her whimsical sense of humor and her signature style, wearing tuxedos, turtlenecks, bowler hats and black-rimmed eyeglasses. <\/p>\n<p>Keaton, who was also a writer, director, photographer, and singer, was additionally famed for her relationships with a string of Hollywood stars, including Al Pacino, Warren Beatty, and Woody Allen. <\/p>\n<p>She is survived by her two children, Dexter, 29, and Duke, 25, whom she famously adopted after her 50th birthday. <\/p>\n<p>An anonymous friend told <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/diane-keaton-listed-dream-home-for-sale-declining-health-in-recent-months-exclusive-11828659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People<\/a> that Keaton\u2019s health \u201cdeclined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit,\u201d they stated. \u201cIn her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Born in Los Angeles, Keaton made her film debut in 1970 in \u201cLovers and Other Strangers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1972, she became a household name with a star turn as Kay Adams-Corleone in \u201cThe Godfather,\u201d starring opposite Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, the latter of whom she had an on-off relationship with for a decade. <\/p>\n<p>That same year, Keaton appeared opposite Woody Allen in \u201cPlay It Again, Sam.\u201d The pair briefly dated, before the relationship turned platonic. <\/p>\n<p>However, it was the start of a decades-long collaboration and lifelong friendship. The pair worked on eight films together, including \u201cAnnie Hall,\u201d for which Keaton won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe in 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Other acclaimed Allen films the actress appeared in include \u201cInteriors,\u201d \u201cManhattan,\u201d and \u201cRadio Days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keaton is pictured with \u201cThe Godfather\u201d co-star Al Pacino on set. The film\u2019s screenplay was written by \u201cYou\u2019ve Got Mail\u201d scribes Delia and Nora Ephron.<\/p>\n<p>Keaton appeared as the family matriarch in the 2005 film \u201cThe Family Stone,\u201d which also featured performances from Rachel McAdams and Sarah Jessica Parker.  \u00a920thCentFox\/Everett Collection<\/p>\n<p>Keaton was also a singer, releasing a holiday song, titled \u201cFirst Christmas,\u201d just last year. <\/p>\n<p>She also had a keen interest in architecture, photography and interior design, publishing several coffee table books, including \u201cThe House That Pinterest Built\u201d in 2017. <\/p>\n<p>The star further released her own label of wine, and penned two bestselling memoirs, \u201cThen Again,\u201d published in 2011 and \u201cBrother &amp; Sister,\u201d published in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, she was honored by the American Film Institute with a Lifetime Achievement Award, where she was honored by stars including Reese Witherspoon, Emma Stone, and Meryl Streep. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has given us so much happiness,\u201d Streep said on stage at the time, remarking on Keaton\u2019s glittering career.<\/p>\n<p>News of Keaton\u2019s death sent shockwaves through Hollywood, with a stream of stars taking to social media to pay tribute to the icon after the news broke Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Midler (right) paid tribute to Keaton in a poignant post shared on Instagram.  \u00a9Paramount\/Courtesy Everett Collection \/ Everett Collection<\/p>\n<p>Keaton is pictured in New York in May 2023.
