The political party governing the Northern Territory has announced a new president, just days after the opposition welcomed a former chief minister into its own leadership role.<\/p>\n

Darwin IT professional Nathan Land has been voted in as the next president of the Country Liberal Party (CLP), following a decision by the current NT president to step aside.<\/p>\n

Mr Land is known in the community as a musician and served for six years as vice-president of the Darwin Game fishing club.<\/p>\n

He has also acted as an emcee at the fishing club’s iconic Barramundi Classic, an annual fishing event regularly attended by CLP politicians, including Treasurer Bill Yan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a statement announcing his election to the role this weekend, Mr Land said he was committed to “continuous improvement” for the CLP.<\/p>\n

“I love fishing, I love the territory’s outdoor lifestyle, and I want my kids to enjoy everything that is special about growing up Territorian, just like I did,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

he said.<\/p>\n

“The Country Liberal Party is strong, united and ready to hold the Albanese Labor government to account to ensure Territorians get a fair go from Canberra.”<\/p>\n

The incoming president \u2014 son to former City of Darwin councillor and long-time CLP supporter Noel Land \u2014 said he had “strong experience in governance”.<\/p>\n

His appointment followed a ballot of party members, held during the CLP’s annual conference in Alice Springs.<\/p>\n

While the event was closed to the media this year, a source inside the conference told the ABC that outgoing president Natasha Griggs had endorsed Mr Land as her replacement.<\/p>\n

Ms Griggs was formerly a federal member for the NT seat of Solomon and served as administrator of the Australian Indian Ocean Territories between 2017 and 2022.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, she announced her decision to withdraw from the running for party president, citing health as a factor in her decision.<\/p>\n

“While my health has been a challenge this year, I’m now well on the road to recovery and feel this is the right time to step back a little,” Ms Griggs said in a statement on social media.<\/p>\n

“We have so many talented younger party members who are eager to take on leadership roles, and I’m genuinely excited to see the next generation step up with the passion and energy they bring.”<\/p>\n

In accordance with the party’s constitution, Mr Land was elected by CLP members present at the conference and will now serve in the role for a term of one year.<\/p>\n

While they cannot alter the “philosophy and platform” of the party, the CLP president does lead the organisation’s various administrative functions.<\/p>\n

Mr Land is the third CLP president to be elected in as many years.<\/p>\n

Labor changes president days prior<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, former NT chief minister Clare Martin was announced as the new president of Territory Labor.<\/p>\n

After first leading Labor into government in 2001, Ms Martin said she now hoped to bring more strength to the party.<\/p>\n

“I was approached about taking up the role, and I thought about it, and I thought ‘I’m pretty good at rebuilding things,'” she told the ABC on Friday.<\/p>\n

The new president said the party “took a big hit” at last year’s NT election, leaving the 25-seat parliament with just four Labor Territorians \u2014 all representing remote electorates.<\/p>\n

“There’s no doubt about it, that was a big loss,” Ms Martin said of the election result.<\/p>\n

“My task is to work with the members, work with the community and rebuild the Labor Party to its strength.”<\/p>\n
