{"id":29668,"date":"2025-07-01T11:06:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T11:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/29668\/"},"modified":"2025-07-01T11:06:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T11:06:13","slug":"thai-courts-suspension-of-paetongtarn-shinawatra-stirs-familiar-turmoil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/29668\/","title":{"rendered":"Thai court&#8217;s suspension of Paetongtarn Shinawatra stirs familiar turmoil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BANGKOK (AP) \u2014 The Constitutional Court\u2019s suspension of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-cabinet-paetongtarn-leak-call-cambodia-f44701c7e21a99f894fa94981a79ee8d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra<\/a> has raised questions about whether her family\u2019s political comeback last year would end with another downfall.<\/p>\n<p>Paetongtarn <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-parliament-prime-minister-paetongtarn-thaksin-59d65bc10b9a7e16505b9e574a1ba66b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was the third prime minister<\/a> in her family, after her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, a telecom billionaire who has been one of Thailand\u2019s top political operators, and her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, who was the country\u2019s first female prime minister. Thaksin was ousted by a military coup in 2006 and Yingluck by a court ruling in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Thaksin remained beloved after his ouster among voters who saw in him and his allies a government that looked after their interests. While campaigning in 2022, Paetongtarn acknowledged her family ties but insisted she was not her father\u2019s proxy. \u201cIt\u2019s not the shadow of my dad. (AP Photo\/Sakchai Lalit, File)<\/p>\n<p>Read More<\/p>\n<p>She also said she hoped her government would be able to \u201cbuild opportunity and quality of life\u201d and \u201cmake the country go forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paetongtarn was suspended Tuesday by the court pending an ethics investigation a leaked phone call with senior Cambodian leader Hun Sen that was perceived as damaging to Thailand\u2019s interests and image.<\/p>\n<p>Eroding trust capped by a diplomatic blunder<\/p>\n<p>Her critics have said Paetongtarn\u2019s government has achieved little. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/news-highlights\/spotlights\/2025\/thai-lgbtq-couples-register-marriages-as-law-gives-them-equal-status\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Marriage equality<\/a> became law but was initiated under her predecessor. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-cannabis-ban-sales-prescription-04b9dc73d43a172cac2da04f0117ab3b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Controls on cannabis<\/a> were retightened after public backlash over decriminalization, but the move and its enforcement were called rushed and confusing.<\/p>\n<p>Her critics also cited unsatisfactory outcomes in other Pheu Thai party policies, like unequal minimum wage increases, constant changes in a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-digital-wallet-handout-economy-97ebed6ec130510a37c98f55316ee2c0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cash handout program<\/a> and the stalled and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-legalizes-casino-entertainment-complex-68422ccdb4823ae0757c6c3ec7064e40\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">controversial legalization of casinos<\/a>. They also noted the lack of progress in tariffs talks with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>But analysts see the leaked call following <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cambodial-thailand-border-conflict-explainer-6a897419733edb91a76fffa31d4aba15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">border tensions with Cambodia<\/a> to be the most disastrous event by far.<\/p>\n<p>The outrage has centered <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-paetongtarn-shinawatra-cambodia-hun-sen-23aa38541ae1b42616d934781d62cd38\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on Paetongtarn\u2019s comments<\/a> about an outspoken Thai army commander and the perception that she was trying to appease Hun Sen. <\/p>\n<p>Paetongtarn apologized but also denied that she had damaged the country. Time and again, Thaksin-backed parties have prevailed in national elections but could not stay in office after legal rulings and destabilizing street protests engineered by Thaksin\u2019s die-hard foes.<\/p>\n<p>But in 2023, Thaksin alienated many of his old supporters with what looked like a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-thaksin-king-reduce-prison-sentence-3026da9ace05ab877e70113f578567d6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">self-serving deal<\/a> with his former conservative opponents. It allowed his <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thaksin-thailand-explainer-3917d6cc84ab461ec25b8c50939bc5d3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">return from exile<\/a> and his party to form the new government, while sidelining the progressive <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-move-forward-constitutional-court-dissolution-e50be1a85aa69f0e3baf4eb0c1bb2ed2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Move Forward Party<\/a>, which finished first in a national election but was seen by the conservative establishment as a greater threat.<\/p>\n<p>Now with the current crisis, things could drastically change for the Shinawatra family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn light of the recent controversy, the Shinawatra spell has been broken. The only viable Shinawatra scion is now tainted,\u201d Napon said. \u201cIt would be an understatement to say that the Shinawatra name no longer guarantees electoral success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And not everything has been squared away with her family\u2019s enemies. Yingluck remains in exile, and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-politics-court-yingluck-shinawatra-0dfa53c9f88548d58d2f66365c9be5c8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">legal problems<\/a> \u2014 arguably politically inspired \u2014 could send her to prison if she returns to Thailand. Thaksin also still faces <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-thaksin-lese-majeste-srettha-move-forward-a3b4bfee63f4ed547fffe2ff153fd0b4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some legal challenges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand\u2019s royalist establishment has long been disturbed that Thaksin\u2019s populist policies appeared to threaten their status and that of the monarchy at the heart of Thai identity. <\/p>\n<p>Paetongtarn now also <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-paetongtarn-phone-cambodia-hun-sen-protest-4623304524a4e3243249ed376065f87d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faces protests<\/a> by familiar faces from the same conservative, pro-royalist group that opposed her father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistory seems to be repeating itself in a way. Thailand seems trapped in a depressingly familiar cycle where Shinawatra-led governments come to power, only to face mounting pressure from traditional power centers, street protests, and extraparliamentary interventions that ultimately force them from office,\u201d Napon said.<\/p>\n<p>Paetongtarn, 38, is the youngest of Thaksin\u2019s three children.
