{"id":296726,"date":"2025-10-12T07:26:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T07:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/296726\/"},"modified":"2025-10-12T07:26:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T07:26:19","slug":"controversial-call-in-georgia-auburn-game-leaves-both-fanbases-angry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/296726\/","title":{"rendered":"Controversial call in Georgia-Auburn game leaves both fanbases angry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Officials during Saturday\u2019s SEC matchup between Auburn and Georgia seemingly fumbled on a call that could have resulted in a touchdown for the Tigers.<\/p>\n<p>Late in the second quarter with Auburn on the Bulldogs\u2019 1-yard line, Tigers quarterback Jackson Arnold rushed into the end zone, but the ball was punched out by Georgia\u2019s defense just as it crossed the goal line.<\/p>\n<p>Though Arnold appeared to have possession once the ball crossed over, referees ruled the play a fumble, with Georgia ultimately recovering.<\/p>\n<p>Amid all of the confusion, Georgia defensive back Kyron Jones ran the ball back into their end zone, but officials ultimately called the play dead despite him never touching the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The apparent gaffe from the officials and video wound up angering both teams, as their respective fans each believed that they scored a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it was a fumble, why didn\u2019t the play continue?\u201d commentator Sean McDonough asked on the ESPN broadcast, though the broadcast team ultimately thought part of the ball crossed the ball line, which would have made it an Auburn touchdown. \u201cHe has the ball, he is across the line. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>But the call went in favor of Georgia, which was able to march down the field for a field goal just before halftime, making it a 10-3 game. The Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1 SEC) took advantage of the break en route to a 20-10 win over the Georgia<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll you have to do is have the nose of the ball break the plane,\u201d Auburn coach Hugh Freeze said after the game. \u201cIt didn\u2019t go our way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even before Auburn fell to a disappointing 3-3 (0-3 SEC), rumors had been swirling about Freeze\u2019s job security.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37360163\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/auburn-quarterback-jackson-arnold-warms-113283643.jpg\" alt=\"Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold warms up before an NCAA college football game against Georgia.\" class=\"wp-image-37360163\"  \/>Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold warms up before their home game against Georgia. AP<\/p>\n<p>Freeze, however, said before Auburn\u2019s latest tough loss that he is not paying any attention to any rumors concerning his job, and is fully focused on the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t pay attention to any of that,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montgomeryadvertiser.com\/story\/sports\/college\/auburn\/2025\/10\/08\/hugh-freeze-auburn-football-hot-seat-georgia\/86499199007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Freeze said during the SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday<\/a>. \u201cOf course, I\u2019m a person of faith, and I know that my story is being written way above my pay grade, and I know we\u2019re doing things the right way here. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re getting closer each game. You\u2019re playing three top-10 teams in a row, and we\u2019ve got an opportunity to knock them off. That\u2019s our sole focus, is that. This is not about me.
