Reese Witherspoon has delivered an emotional tribute to Diane Keaton today, just hours after the star\u2019s death at the age of 79 <\/a>was publicly announced.<\/p>\n

Witherspoon was on stage at an event in Los Angeles today, addressing a crowd full of people, when she took a few minutes to address the breaking news of\u00a0Keaton\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to talk to you for one second \u2013 and I\u2019m going to try and get through this without tearing up \u2013 but I don\u2019t know if you guys heard that Diane Keaton passed today,\u201d Witherspoon began, her voice faltering, in footage shared on social media by\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sad news was met with an audible mix of recognition and surprise in the audience \u2013 some called out \u201cyes,\u201d while others appeared to be hearing of Keaton\u2019s passing for the first time.<\/p>\n

Witherspoon revealed that Keaton had actually been a key mentor at the start of her career, casting the young star in one of her first roles, in the 1991 television film\u00a0\u201cWildflower.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keaton was directing the TV movie, and Witherspoon said the Hollywood legend had been<\/a> instantly charmed by Witherspoon\u2019s naivety and strong Nashville accent, and cast her on the spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you making that up? That accent you\u2019re doing?\u201d Keaton had asked her during her audition for the role.<\/p>\n

Witherspoon starred alongside Patricia Arquette and Beau Bridges in the movie, and said she was grateful to Keaton for taking her under her wing and offering her some much-needed guidance.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe really took the time to pull me aside and say, \u2018Stand up straight, okay?\u2019 I want you to have good posture. If you\u2019re gonna be an actress, you gotta work on your posture, okay?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Okay, Miss Keaton,\u2019\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n

Another oh-so-Keaton moment came when she was directing Witherspoon in an emotional scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was like, \u2018Oh my god, that was amazing\u2019, and then we did it again, and she goes, \u2018That was not as good, so we\u2019re gonna go with the first one,\u2019\u201d she revealed.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Witherspoon called Keaton \u201csuch an original\u201d<\/a> and encouraged those in the audience to celebrate her life by watching her films and also trying to live as she did: \u201cWear a really cool, interesting outfit, take a cool picture and just live your dream. Just be your unique interesting self. I think Diane would be really happy [with that].\u201d<\/p>\n

Witherspoon\u00a0shared footage<\/a>\u00a0of her impromptu speech on social media today, writing that she was \u201cso grateful to have had [Keaton] as a mentor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Witherspoon is one of many Hollywood heavyweights paying tribute to Keaton, one of the industry\u2019s most beloved and prolific actresses who retreated from the spotlight in the past 12 months as she\u00a0faced a reported steep decline\u00a0in her health.<\/a><\/p>\n

Among the most emotional tributes came from her co-stars in the hit 1996 film\u00a0\u201cThe First Wives Club,\u201d\u00a0Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler, who\u00a0both said they were devastated\u00a0by the news of her passing.<\/p>\n

Keaton, who never married, is survived by the two children she adopted when she was in her 50s, daughter Dexter and son Duke.<\/p>\n
