{"id":297057,"date":"2025-10-12T10:42:58","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T10:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/297057\/"},"modified":"2025-10-12T10:42:58","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T10:42:58","slug":"mamdanis-mayoral-campaign-took-in-13000-in-illegal-foreign-campaign-cash-records-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/297057\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani&#8217;s mayoral campaign took in $13,000 in illegal foreign campaign cash, records show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lefty socialist and mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani\u2019s\u00a0campaign\u00a0quietly took in nearly $13,000 in potentially illegal foreign donations \u2014 including one from his mother-in-law in Dubai, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n<p>At least 170 of the nearly 54,000 contributions to the leading Democratic candidate\u2019s campaign came from donors with addresses outside the United States, an examination of NYC Campaign Finance Board records found.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/13\/us-news\/californians-other-lefty-out-of-state-donors-provided-77-of-2-4-m-raised-by-super-pac-backing-mamdanis-nyc-mayoral-bid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Only US citizens<\/a> or permanent legal residents are allowed to contribute to political campaigns and political action committees under federal, state and city law, and candidates are expected to return any of the\u00a0illegal donations. Violators who knowingly accept foreign donations could face hefty fines and imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s mother-in-law, Dr. Bariah Dardari, donated to his campaign \u2014 but the funds were quickly returned. doctor_bariah\/instagram<\/p>\n<p>But so far, the campaign has failed to return 88 of the foreign donations worth a total of $7,190, records showed.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s campaign has brought in $4 million in private donations, scored another $12.7 million in public matching funds, and with less than a month to go before election day, has nearly $6.1 million in hand.<\/p>\n<p>His campaign issued a statement Saturday saying \u201cwe will of course return any donations that are not in compliance with CFB law\u201d after being provided a detailed breakdown of the 88 donations yet to be returned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A campaign spokesperson, however, declined to clarify why so many foreign donations are still in Mamdani\u2019s war chest.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign donations have sparked criticism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere there\u2019s smoke, there\u2019s fire, so I would be very concerned,\u201d said Republican mayoral candidate Curtis\u00a0Sliwa, upon learning of the foreign money coming into Mamdani\u2019s campaign.\u00a0\u201cThere is probably a lot more in terms of foreign money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two months ago,\u00a0Sliwa,\u00a0during an interview with Fox Business, called on the US Department of Justice to investigate his suspicions that Mamdani is being aided by difficult-to-trace \u201cdark money\u201d illegally being funneled into super PACs through foreign nationals.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s campaign has so far failed to return 88 foreign donations.  Robert Miller<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very problematic, not just for Zohran Mamdani, but anybody who has these kinds of PACs, because it\u2019s a license to illegally funnel money,\u201d Sliwa\u00a0told The Post. \u201cAnd foreign countries know you don\u2019t have to go to war against America. All you gotta do is manipulate the election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Mamdani campaign has given back a paltry $5,608 \u2014 including a contribution from Bariah Dardari, the mother of Mamdani\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/26\/us-news\/zohran-mamdanis-presidential-style-uganda-wedding-bash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new bride Rama Duwaji<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dardari gave $500 in January, listing an address of the hospital in Dubai where she works as a pediatrician, filings showed. The money was reported returned the same day. <\/p>\n<p>Dardari did not return requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the foreign donations<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/25\/us-news\/zohran-mamdanis-victory-over-andrew-cuomo-is-a-political-earthquake-for-the-democratic-party\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> started coming in June in the lead-up to the Democratic primary<\/a>, in which Mamdani scored an upset victory over New York City Mayor Eric Adams and former Gov. Rob Jejenich \/ NY Post Design<\/p>\n<p>Tech professionals, doctors, university professors, students and retired teachers made up the bulk of the foreign contributions, with some pledging as little as $1 to the campaign of the Democratic socialist, and as much as $2,100, records showed.<\/p>\n<p>Among the biggest donors was James Furlaud, an environmental scientist at Australia\u2019s University of Tasmania, who pledged $2,100 to the campaign. Furlaud studies the effects of climate change on forests and how it could lead to fires, according to his published academic work. James Furlaud\/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>Ada Diaz Ahmed, who is described as a Dubai-based investor, donated $2,100 to the campaign in September, records show.<\/p>\n<p>Jun-Dai Bates Kobashigawa, a software developer who lives in Montreal, Canada, donated $250 to the campaign in July. Kobashigawa, who works for GoDaddy, grew up in San Francisco, and attended Bard College in Dutchess County. He did not return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Ugur Macit, who lives in the town of Muhlheim am Main in Germany, also donated $250 to the Mamdani campaign in August. Macit is a software engineer who studied computer science at the University of Dusseldorf, according to public records. He could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed Enbya, a physician in Calgary, Canada, donated $100 to the campaign in September, filings show. He could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Nupur Amin Marquardt\u2019s donation is allowed under the Federal Election Commission\u2019s rules because she is an American citizen. Nupur Amin\/ Linkedin<\/p>\n<p>Nupur Amin Marquardt, a US citizen who works as a consultant in Hamburg, Germany, donated $50 to Mamdani\u2019s campaign in August. As a US citizen, her donation is permitted, according to the Federal Election Commission\u2019s rules.<\/p>\n<p>Even though she has no connection to New York City, she felt inspired to support the candidate, Marquardt said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the only campaign I\u2019ve seen that\u2019s not trying to win by convincing a group of people to hate another group of people,\u201d she told The Post Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the contributions to the socialist\u2019s campaign<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/23\/us-news\/mamdani-campaign-rakes-in-1m-with-majority-of-donations-coming-from-outside-nyc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> have come from outside New York City,<\/a> city filings revealed last month.
