{"id":297630,"date":"2025-10-12T15:49:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T15:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/297630\/"},"modified":"2025-10-12T15:49:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T15:49:12","slug":"nyc-mayoral-race-mamdani-campaign-makes-push-for-staten-island-voters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/297630\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC mayoral race: Mamdani campaign makes push for Staten Island voters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J5LPKSOFTNEXDHTXRYRBWKOPMY\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Despite gloomy skies and rain, a group of dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zohranfornyc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.zohranfornyc.com\/\">Zohran Mamdani <\/a>campaign workers was not deterred by the impending coastal storm as they gathered on the steps behind Staten Island Borough Hall on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CGF66I6DGJBL3PKLZTCYQRVC4E\">Yesenia Mata, executive director of La Colmena, joined with other community leaders to bring together a diverse group of Staten Islanders for a \u201cDay of Action\u201d as they began canvassing voters in support of Mamdani\u2019s bid to win the New York City mayoral election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OEXXXBNWYNCNFMHLNDGVRRVLDM\">Mata said she was pleased by the turnout. \u201cI feel that it shows where Staten Island is heading. It\u2019s showing a movement that\u2019s happening. Today was a perfect example of the diverse communities that came together and are ready for change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WVKZIHKTQRF3ZEL24HE6X3DV2Y\">\u201cWe really, truly believe that if he wins, it\u2019s going to be a huge success, not just for certain communities, but for all Staten Islanders,\u201d Mata added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MNJ4OV73PRATJJFH5QNZN65Q4A\">The group was joined by Assemblymember Marcela Mitaynes, who represents Brooklyn\u2019s 51st District, which encompasses Sunset Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M7UZFFKVMZBO3H5M6P4FPCFNO4\">Mitaynes, the first Peruvian American to be elected to the State Assembly, made the journey from Brooklyn by train and the Staten Island Ferry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3NUG2AREBFHXHJETASI6ULTOAM\">In her remarks to the volunteers she positioned the mayor as a figure who could also wield influence on state-level issues, asserting that, if mayor, Mamdani could pressure the governor and become a powerful ally for state legislators with similar goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LRQ2IINJHRDEHDNRNY4RMSGEXI\">\u201cOne of the great things that the state legislature could do is have a powerful ally in our mayor who\u2019s going to use his bully pulpit to help push this governor to implement the things that are really going to make changes,\u201d Mitaynes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4KG6FRNCOJBMXOKLDDHJW4BUUY\">\u201cMost importantly, Zohran can\u2019t just win; he has to have a huge victory to be able to show that we very much want to take a different path. We are immigrants, we are working class, and New York City is our home, and we will stand up and defend it,\u201d added Mitaynes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2TRML5YJXFGDLAS7HSXAK6RBI4\">Justin Wood from St. George attended because, he said, \u201cI just think it\u2019s exciting that we can elect a mayor and local government that just want to make our lives better. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PKUHPKHZZVEEHAAYGPD4R46JGA\">\u201cWhether it\u2019s improving transportation, building more affordable housing, or grocery stores that are affordable, I think these things make a big difference in New Yorkers\u2019 lives, and I\u2019m just excited to make it happen,\u201d Wood explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GYNRJY7EGJFZFP64NWKML57IXM\">Niamh Alarton, a student at the College of Staten Island, attended the event to fulfill an assignment for her photography class, learn more about the campaign and help with canvassing for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ANJMULJ32BD25OAEKO4JNHK2SQ\">Alarton said, \u201cZohran\u2019s bringing his campaign to Staten Island is nice to see because that\u2019s not something I feel like I would see very often, or that Staten Island gets considered in the mayoral election.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Mayoral race heats up on Staten Island<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ASHDLEF4ZRBUPKQPVHMB4VN3YA\">\u201cWhat I\u2019m hearing in the news is that Mamdani is leading four of the five boroughs. We know that there are Democrats here, so this is our opportunity to really show what Staten Island can do,\u201d Mitaynes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C5QSBGQLVVBM3NHPB5IU3BVTN4\">She was likely referring to a <a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3935\"> Quinnipiac poll<\/a> released Thursday that shows Mamdani leads with 46% of likely voters backing him, Cuomo with 33% and Sliwa with 15%. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M5BHT7CZKVBWBLXC766OEKD3HI\">The poll\u2019s breakdown shows that Staten Island is the only borough where the majority of respondents did not support the front-runner, with 40% choosing Cuomo, 34% Sliwa and 21% Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HG6F4QTLGFFPPH2ONTZTUOK5KM\">As the race nears its end, and with only the three candidates left standing, campaigning has turned up in recent weeks on Staten Island. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"A23L426P6FC2XDM5UTH5E7Q55Q\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/cuomo-steps-up-courtship-of-staten-island-voters-in-final-weeks-of-mayoral-race.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/cuomo-steps-up-courtship-of-staten-island-voters-in-final-weeks-of-mayoral-race.html\">Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo has visited the borough at least weekly<\/a> since mid-September, receiving endorsements, giving remarks at the First Central Baptist Church and, on Friday, popping into the Corporate Commons 3 building on South Avenue. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X7C5XZKZO5BLNPF2FANALH54EU\">Cuomo is running as an independent candidate, now the only one left following the suspension of Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GSZPNZCJ5ZFKHHWYQ7H7XKIWBI\">Republican Curtis Sliwa has been a frequent presence on Staten Island throughout the campaign, visiting for a variety of events, including this past weekend\u2019s Italian Festival on the Mount. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WAWZF4WOM5FAXEG37DNW6GTMOE\">Last week Sliwa held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/transportation\/2025\/10\/speed-bumps-at-nyc-camera-locations-mayoral-candidate-sliwa-backs-safety-proposal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/transportation\/2025\/10\/speed-bumps-at-nyc-camera-locations-mayoral-candidate-sliwa-backs-safety-proposal.html\">a traffic-related press conference<\/a> with some of the Staten Island Republican elected officials who are supporting his candidacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZYXF7V3FEBFYBKA3UB2BWBFKV4\">And last weekend Mamdani made the rounds on Staten Island, visiting the Albanian Islamic Cultural Center according to sources, and posting photos on the social media app Bluesky with renowned chef Shaw-nae Dixon during a stop in Clifton.<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
