At the Sept. 30 Denton County Commissioners Court, Precinct 1 commissioner Ryan Williams spoke about a recent call he got from a jury duty phone scammer impersonating a police lieutenant.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll get these calls of somebody acting like they\u2019re from the Denton County Police Department,\u201d Williams said during the community updates<\/a> portion of the meeting. \u201cThis was a Denton County lieutenant that was calling because I missed going to jury duty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams knew he had not received a jury duty notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd nevertheless, I played along for a few seconds just because I wanted to p\u2014 him off more. And then when I told him that it was a fake call and this is not legitimate, that upset him pretty bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denton County in 2023 posted a warning<\/a> on its website about jury duty phone scammers who seek payments for missed jury duty fines.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease make sure everybody\u2019s aware of those kinds of phone calls.\u201d Williams concluded. \u201cThe law enforcement will never call you and say you owe them money like that. It doesn\u2019t work that way. And they\u2019re not going to come arrest you for jury duty at your house either.\u201d<\/p>\n
