Scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2025\/kitagawa\/facts\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2025\/kitagawa\/facts\/\">Susumu Kitagawa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2025\/robson\/facts\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2025\/robson\/facts\/\">Richard Robson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2025\/yaghi\/facts\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2025\/yaghi\/facts\/\">Omar Yaghi<\/a>, who won the award, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2025\/press-release\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2025\/press-release\/\">established the field in the late 1980s<\/a>. Since then, these \u201csuper sponges\u201d have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2542435118304574\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2542435118304574\">used for batteries<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2020\/nr\/d0nr03549a\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2020\/nr\/d0nr03549a\">supercapacitors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/B9780323907842000010\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/B9780323907842000010\">fuel cells<\/a>, where their vast internal space lets ions move faster and easier and their adaptable designs let chemists modify the molecular storage space. <\/p>\n<p>PFAS begone<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">To <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.utdallas.edu\/mario.wriedt\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mario Wriedt<\/a>, an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UT Dallas, the promise of MOFs goes beyond batteries: These 3D \u201crooms\u201d may be a key to trapping per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/environment\/2024\/05\/14\/what-to-know-about-dallas-water-systems-and-new-federal-limits-on-forever-chemicals\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/environment\/2024\/05\/14\/what-to-know-about-dallas-water-systems-and-new-federal-limits-on-forever-chemicals\/\">known as PFAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">PFAS are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pfas\/pfas-explained\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pfas\/pfas-explained\">large family of artificial \u201cforever chemicals\u201d<\/a> that can take up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/topics\/chemicals-and-pollution-action\/pollution-and-health\/persistent-organic-pollutants-pops\/and\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">several thousand years<\/a> to break down. Used across countless consumer, commercial and industrial products, PFAS show up nearly everywhere \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/environment\/2025\/02\/13\/johnson-county-declares-state-of-disaster-due-to-forever-chemicals-in-agriculture-land\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/environment\/2025\/02\/13\/johnson-county-declares-state-of-disaster-due-to-forever-chemicals-in-agriculture-land\/\">water<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.estlett.1c00481\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.estlett.1c00481\">air<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7654437\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7654437\/\">soil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2023\/09\/pfas-forever-chemicals-harming-wildlife-the-world-over-study\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2023\/09\/pfas-forever-chemicals-harming-wildlife-the-world-over-study\/\">wildlife<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/pfas\/hcp\/clinical-overview\/human-exposure.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/pfas\/hcp\/clinical-overview\/human-exposure.html\">even in people<\/a>. Exposure to some PFAS has been linked to harmful health effects in both humans and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/news\/researcher-looking-pfas-exposure-dogs-cats\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/news\/researcher-looking-pfas-exposure-dogs-cats\">animals<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Wriedt\u2019s group at UT Dallas is fine-tuning MOFs to snag PFAS more efficiently. They\u2019re doing so by tailoring pore sizes on the MOFs and adding chemical \u201chandles\u201d that latch onto PFAS and hold them tight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a handful of MOFs in the lab which are outperforming any state-of-the-art material out there,\u201d said Wriedt. \u201cSo record PFAS removal capacity [and] ultra-fast removal that happens in seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The long-term vision is to create water purification systems with a MOF layer that scrubs whatever slips through. Wriedt also envisions portable MOF-based tests that crews could use to check water quality in the field, especially in situations where water contamination with PFAS may occur, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-24-107322\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-24-107322\">such as after firefighting<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Boost the immune system<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Some MOFs can carry vital medicines and vaccines, nudging the immune system in the right direction with their metals. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1713 \/ 2586\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"1713\" height=\"2586\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IJDH2VQMRRHVDH5QYEGU3U5W34.jpg\" alt=\"Jeremiah Gassensmith is an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UT Dallas.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Jeremiah Gassensmith is an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UT Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>UT Dallas<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe know that metals are an important part of the immune system,\u201d  said <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.utdallas.edu\/gassensmith\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremiah Gassensmith<\/a>, an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UT Dallas. Because scientists can change the metals in MOFs, he added, there are \u201cendless possibilities\u201d in tuning that system. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">At Gassensmith\u2019s lab, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utdallas.edu\/health-medicine\/vaccine-delivery-system-2024\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/news.utdallas.edu\/health-medicine\/vaccine-delivery-system-2024\/\">MOFs made of zinc<\/a> are used as protective shells for proteins that go into vaccines. The MOF preserves the protein from degradation and tough conditions, such as high temperatures, and the zinc boosts the immune system\u2019s response to the protein. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Gassensmith, who worked with Nobel laureate Omar Yaghi while at Northwestern University, is developing MOF-based vaccines for recurrent urinary tract infections and MOF-based treatments for tuberculosis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">His lab has already tested a way to deliver MOF-based vaccines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2023\/05\/17\/scared-of-needles-a-puff-of-gas-could-one-day-deliver-your-vaccine\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with a puff of pressurized air.<\/a> This method could one day be an alternative for those afraid of needles.   <\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/6WQ6QBZJKJCG5GDVAOTLN5YS6Q.jpg\" alt=\"An air gun delivered powdered metal organic frameworks, which can hold vaccines, into pig...\"\/>Breathe easy<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Like Wriedt, Smaldone is focused on capturing harmful chemicals with MOFs \u2014 but also destroying them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">His team is 3D printing polymers loaded with MOFs to create materials capable of trapping airborne toxins and breaking them down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cRight now, we\u2019re working with the Army to develop filters that can degrade things like toxic chemicals or chemical warfare agents,\u201d Smaldone said. \u201cSo you can make these into a mask or some kind of filter.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Beyond military use, Smaldone said the MOF polymers could help tackle air pollution \u2014 whether through a mask, ventilation filter or a standalone device. This effort could  reduce chronic exposure that <a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/asthma\/asthma-triggers-causes\/air-pollution-smog-asthma\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/asthma\/asthma-triggers-causes\/air-pollution-smog-asthma\/\">can worsen asthma<\/a> and, over time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacr.org\/patients-caregivers\/progress-against-cancer\/air-pollution-associated-cancer\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raise cancer risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:4096 \/ 2732\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"4096\" height=\"2732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/OQYQCSVNERDZXBSIN6Y4FX3LHI.jpg\" alt=\"Ronald Smaldone is an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UT Dallas.&#10;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ronald Smaldone is an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UT Dallas.\n<\/p>\n<p>sarah wall<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">For Smaldone, who also worked with Yaghi, current research into MOFs underscores the importance of curiosity as the starting point for scientific inquiry. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cEarly on, the Yaghi, Robson and Kitagawa groups were just interested in studying coordination chemistry and figuring out ways to make materials,\u201d he said of the Nobel winners. \u201cBasic research is super important because there\u2019s no way to know what direction it might go.
