(ABC News: Rhiannon Shine)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Last year Minister Carey<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-02-01\/tree-canopy-scheme-perth-nedlands-to-be-rejected-by-john-carey\/103411194\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103411194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> intervened to scrap a scheme that would have enforced the protection of mature trees on some private properties<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Minister Carey has previously argued the tree protection laws were controversial because they impacted home owners who wanted to build or renovate on their property.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve got to take the community with us because we can put in any or all these [punitive] policies, but nothing stops a person just ripping out a tree any time \u2014 and then it&#8217;s done,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But some experts said the government was not going to shift the needle with an all-carrot-no-stick approach, when nearly 80 per cent of tree loss happened on private property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ll never be able to get to the 30 per cent target by 2040 just by planting trees,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Minister Carey argued the state government had already taken steps like mandating deep soil zones and incentivising tree retention, but faced a &#8220;quagmire&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">WA Greens leader Brad Pettitt said protecting trees and building houses did not need to be mutually exclusive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There is a real risk that this government&#8217;s legacy is going to be a bunch of unliveable, tree-less, hot housing in the wrong locations,&#8221;
