JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 Sunday marks one year since the day a veteran corrections officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office lost his life after stepping into a domestic dispute at a truck stop on Jacksonville\u2019s northside.<\/p>\n

The Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office remembered Officer Brad McNew on Sunday for his \u201ckindness, faith and dedication\u201d to the community he served for 24 years.<\/p>\n

McNew was shot and killed on Oct.12, 2024. He intervened in a violent dispute between Demaurea Grant and Makayla Huggins<\/a> at a Love\u2019s travel station on Duval Road.<\/p>\n

Moments after Grant and the Huggins returned to their car, JSO said Grant shot McNew, then drove off, sparking a nationwide manhunt.<\/p>\n

He was caught in North Carolina days later and extradited to the Clay County jail in May. He faces first-degree murder and other charges.<\/p>\n

McNew\u2019s loved ones, colleagues and friends had nothing but good things and memories to share about him.<\/p>\n

He was remembered as someone who was selfless, loving and devoted.<\/p>\n

He is survived by his wife, Elda McNew, and their son, Liam McNew, who shared nothing but great memories of McNew.<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s pretrial will be held on Monday.<\/p>\n
