PHOENIX \u2014 Delays affected flights into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Sunday morning after a ground stop was issued due to thunderstorms.<\/p>\n

According to the Federal Aviation Administration<\/a>, departures to Sky Harbor had an average delay of 78 minutes because of the storms. The delays were expected to last until around 2 p.m.<\/p>\n

The flight-tracking website FlightAware <\/a>showed more than 175 flights were delayed as of 8:45 a.m.<\/p>\n

In addition to the delays, a ground stop was in place at Phoenix Sky Harbor until 9 a.m.<\/p>\n

Stopped flights were from a variety of different cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, St. Louis, Houston and parts of New Mexico.<\/p>\n

The airport, which the National Weather Service<\/a> in Phoenix uses for the city\u2019s official readings, had received 1.58 inches of rain before 9 a.m.<\/p>\n

NWS showed weather activity<\/a> moving northeast through the Valley around 7 a.m. and described the thunderstorms<\/a> as having \u201cvery heavy\u201d rainfall.<\/p>\n
